Looking to buy my first ever pickup truck. I want something with a short bed that's good on mileage. American made or foreign made doesn't matter to me, but I do prefer to drive stick. Any recommendations for me on truck makes/models you gals absolutely love?

I can't see how gender has much to do with truck choice. Out here, trucks are close to half the vehicles on the road by either gender. More important is suitability for the job you want it to do. 'Truck' can be anything from a 4 cyl 2WD Toyota Tacoma or Honda Ridgeline to a Super Duty diesel Ford, Chevy or Dodge.

How much do you want to carry? 2 or 4 wheel drive? Do you want to pull a trailer? How many people usually go along with you? Do you need 4 doors?

I happen to really like my Toyota Tundra. It pulls my 32 ft. 10,000 lb 5th wheel RV quite nicely, but I don't see many women driving them around our town, and I can't say it gets exemplary fuel mileage- 13-15ish around town and I doubt it'll beat 20 on the highway. It does turn quite tight- for a large pickup.

Look around your dealers/car lots. What trucks catch your eye? Maybe from these clues a recommendation or two might surface. If you want smallish but fairly roomy with good 'truck' stats, check the various Toyota Tacoma's. If full size suits your needs better, I'd look at Ford F-150. The interiors are really nice.

BTW, both sizes of Toyota trucks are made in Texas.

Happy choosing...

Jim

I love our Ford 150 because it feels like a smoothly riding car, handles well, has comfortable seats, running boards and adjustable seat peddles. It is a crew cab, a short bed, all wheel drive. Ours is an 04, so our best mileage is 15mpg, but the same trucks are now being advertised as 23mpg.

You can't expect us guys to stay away from a truck thread!

If you want a full sized (1/2 ton or bigger) with decent power and good gas mileage the choices are pretty limited. Either an F150 with the EcoBoost engine, or the Dodge Ram. I've got an '01 F150 SuperCrew (4 door, short box, 4WD) and it's a gas hog. Fortunately, although it's my daily driver, it only has 90K miles on it. Other than the mileage and having the turning radius of an aircraft carrier, I love my truck. Will almost certainly buy another F150 when I get rid of this one (which will be a while).

I love my Toyota Tacoma, 4 wd stick shift. The only thing I would do differently is get the small jump seat option in the cab, because there is not enough room for my dogs and gear that shouldn't get cold.

I stayed out of the car guys thread. Somehow the German car trio don't do it for me. Otoh, a boattail speedster definitely does. As I wipe the drool off my chin :)

For my daily commute, I drive a Honda GX.

I still have a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. It is an extended cab --- but only my
5'2" bonus daughter can fit back there. It gives me a little extra room to store stuff. The truck has a little over 200K miles on it and it has never needed a major repair. (I regularly maintained including transmission servicing - auto, not stick).

I have not driven a truck with a stick since my 3 on the tree Ford F150 in 1968.

Once owned these: FirstFairway@Walden X 2; Lawai Beach; ManhattanClub; PuebloBonitoRose; 4 South Africa--now timeshare-free
Our son has a Toyota Tacoma four door with a short bed that I have driven a time or two. It's automatic and is very comfortable to ride in and easy to drive.

As a female who has "been there" and chose to buy an SUV instead of a pickup, would you please elaborate on why you are considering a pickup? :ponder:

Hmmm, good question! Let's just say I'm into gardening and want to leave myself open to cleaning out a few barns for compost, which I'd like to haul home in the open air. I have a very strong sense of smell and don't think an SUV would work for that purpose. ;)

Oh and PJ Rose...thanks for referring to that other thread...I wanted to raise a few eyebrows by playing on that one and its subject header. I think it worked...even those guys who can't resist looking at a truck thread seemed not to mind my lil ol jab at that other thread's header!

P.S. To all who posted, thanks for the suggestions...I will start doing some research online to see where it all steers me (pun intended). Keep those ideas rollin'!

You are welcome to all the horse manure you can haul from my farm. I have a Suburban, my sister has a Chevy HD 2500 that I love and covet. My son has a Toyota Tacoma thats nice also. Do get a jump seat.

I have a trailer and a tractor with a front loader for that job, so I went with the SUV. Thanks for the update, and good luck with your purchase!

Another vote for Toyota Tacoma - w/extended cab. The doggie loves to stretch out in the back of the cab.

My ride for the last 12 years is an '89 F-150 w/8' bed. I'm @ 380K miles with 1 re-build. I drive stick too, and I can't tell you how much hassle it's saved me. For my personal use, I need a long bed, but if I didn't haul a lot of long heavy stuff around that needs to be enclosed, I'd be interested in a 6' bed with a "cab and a half". While I'm a loyal Ford girl, if I didn't need a long bed, I'd seriously look at a Tacoma. The Toyotas are darn near indestructible. Parts are easy to find, and Toyota is less grouchy than American manufacturers when you say "I want a stick". No gripes with Dodge but I'm not a Chevy fan. There is one downside to the Toyota, the distance between the floor of the bed & the rail. It's not the same as the American manufacturers, it's shorter. While this makes getting things in & out of the bed from the side of the truck easier, it makes a tall load a lot less stable. Just something to think about.

Have you checked out consumer reports? In their reports, they also look at the brand & model's historical repair needs. I seriously would not buy a vehicle new or used without checking out what they had to say about it.

No recommendations I'm afraid.

I thought I was the only one who likes trucks. My old girl, retired from public life 7 years ago at the age of 22. Bright yellow with rust in the doors she was eye catching :p. 15 yo DS didn't appreciate how lucky he was to learn to drive such a feisty car - the longest gear stick I've ever seen (with a bend in it), flattened seats so low he needed a cushion to see out the window. I told him if he could master driving the ute he'd be able to master anything.

Favourite journeys - collecting the Christmas tree each year.

The SUV's I have now are much prettier but aren't nearly as much fun. I don't even enjoy buying pot plants because I inevitably need to vacuum the spilled dirt off the carpet. I put tarpaulins down before I collect hay bales for the same reason.

Some vehicles leave an impression. :)

My wife would rather drive my 2011 Ford F-150 4x4 than her brand new Camry! She said it's more comfortable and I agree.

Thanks for the offer of the horse manure! Now...may I borrow your Suburban, your sis's Chevy or your son's truck to haul it? TIA! :D

Love, love, love my 2010 F150

Just happens I am a gardener too. It's my job. I often get teased that this is not a work truck! Yah, so?
I have to laugh that my truck is also a man magnet! Funny, I know, but I have had more men say, wow, nice truck, than I can count on both hands.
I have a rear back up camera which is so usefull for hooking up trailers and not running over people. The back seat has so much room for my kids...its like sitting on your living room couch back there. Comes with a full floor mat that covers the whole back floor.
I'm a shortie and the seat adjusts up so it's comefy driving as well as gas peddle adjusts so you can be back away from the air bag.
I have always driven a truck and thought maybe I'm ready for a SUV. When I sat in a mid size SUV I felt so small and vunerable as if someone might smash into me at any second.
good luck
