Fellow tuggers,

DD and her new husband took a voluntary bump from their flight on United Airlines coming home from their Orlando honeymoon in July. They each got a United Airlines voucher which allowed them to purchase tickets to NYC.

They are going in mid October and are having "Sticker' shock as to the prices of hotel rooms in NYC as we have to add almost 35% exchange on our Canadian dollar. Does anyone know a hidden gem reasonable priced hotel in that area. They are willing to take subway/train to get into the city if need be. They are open to hostels or BB as well.

They currently have a reservation about 45 minute commute from NYC at $150 per night.

Thanks in advance for any/all suggestions.

Long Island City - subway ride away

My husband Dave works in LIC and commutes in daily via Metro North and subway from where we live in CT. He says LIC is one subway stop on the 7 subway train (not even close to 45 minutes away). I checked via Marriott and there are 2 Fairfield Inns in the range of 150-170... Hope this helps!

Sometimes you can get a good deal on the Doubletree in jersey City in NJ and take the PATH train in. It's a 22 minute ride, except very late at night and early AM when it is 27 minutes, from there to 33rd st. It's easy and safe as well. The PATH trains run all day and all night.

Here's a link to hotels that are near the Queensboro Plaza (#7) and Queens Plaza (E train) subway stations in Long Island City. As mentioned, the #7 train at Queensboro Plaza goes straight to Grand Central. The E train at Queens Plaza although more stops along the way would take them directly either to 5th Avenue and 53d Street (Museum of Modern Art) or West 4th Street (Greenwich Village).

Zoom in to pick a hotel that's within walking distance of the stations.

We are going in October and will be staying at the Radio City Apartments. This is a serviced apartment building, which means we get maid service daily. I don't know if it's as "cheap" as you are looking for, but it does have a kitchen and laundry facilities on site. The location is great. For us it was reasonable since there are three of us traveling and gave us some space.
