What is the backstory of the guy on youtube saying timeshares are wolves, people are sheep, and TUG is the sheepdog? He says TUG sells our data. I assume there is a backstory here to how he got disgruntled and chose to slander the community.

There was some discussion here on TUG when that video was originally published. Will have to see if I can find the thread.

The comments are quite comical. I suspect they were a timeshare exit company person that then shared the video with their friends also in the same business.

Edit, found it. There was also a long thread on TripAdvisor about it as well as a blog post.

My money is on a scammer being responsible. A scammer who posted on TUG and was immediately called out for being a scammer. This scammer likely wants his potential victims to think it is TUG that is a scam to help his “business”. I say scammer because the related “blog” attacking TUG put out around the same time called out a user named “XR8“ with a baby face as an avatar. I am certain he meant me and made a typo on the user name. I have a tendency sometimes to bring out details/proof as to why a company is a scam. I must have pissed off a scammer.

Most of the commenters on the YouTube are profiles created within days of the YouTube video being posted.

I just saw that video last Friday. I've only been on Tug a short time but I instantly knew this was a trash video. Besides, even if all our data is being sold, that is a TINY price to pay compared to all the help I get from reading and learning here. In fact, I probably need to be billed more ;)

I didn't think of an exit company. But, that would make sense considering how they talk about exits.

Yeah, that is what was making me think of someone in the exit industry. The mentioned how TUG will tell you it is impossible to exit. Based on some of the comments, it also seems to be someone in a corp or business environment.

I'm still finding my way around here. But, helping people exit seems like a major emphasis here.
More accurately, TUGgers help newbies escape brutally expensive timeshare purchases from developers (i.e. "sales weasels", to use the TUG vernacular). Timeshares bought on the resale market--purchased after spending a lot of time on TUG asking questions and reading Stickies on the various timeshare company systems--most usually have a much higher batting average for success and enjoyment.

There are a handful of timeshares which are selling at developer prices because people think they're worth it. A handful.

If a timeshare costs less, all-in, than renting a room on vacation, it's a winner. There are a lot of winners which cost quite a bit of money. There are even more losers which aren't worth so much as a plug nickel.

The big-picture problem is that the average person will not read, will not research, and makes decisions based on what some random person tells them. This doesn't just apply to timeshares. It applies to basically everything.
