As many of you know, our DS, DIL and grand baby Were living in South Korea. We visited them 4 times. This summer, he accepted a position teaching for the American International School in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam? Since they have decided not to come for Christmas, we are going to visit them next month! He has a school break during our visit, and is thinking we may go to the island of Phu Quoc for several days. Can't wait!

That should be a great trip! I hope you have the opportunity to visit other areas as well. I will forever think of Ho Chi Minh as "Saigon" and visited there very briefly in September of 2012. I found it very industrial and not so appealing while Hanoi is a lovely city having had a heavy French influence. Halong Bay in the north was a once in a lifetime bucket list experience for me! I hope you can see that some day!

Da Nang is near Ho Chi Minh; I have not been there but my husband traveled often for work and the old city of Da Nang is the craft, silk, embroidery, wood working, etc., center for Vietnam. Marble Mountain is near the airport on the way into Da Nang and we have these big marble lions that hubby had shipped over from there.

If you are like me, you will be amazed when you see all the motor scooters in the streets! And you'll be snapping photos of number of people and items they pile onto them! The Vietnamese local who worked with my husband, and was my guide, told me when crossing the street to step out with confidence and do not hesitate, just "GO!" He said not to look at them. It was really scary as they buzzed about me! I was so glad to have him with me. Oh, and some shops expect you to remove your shoes before entering.

My gun boat was home ported at An Thoi on Phu Quoc, it is one of the most incredibly beautiful places on earth (I'm sure it's much nicer without the bullets). Be sure to pick up a bottle nuc mam fish sauce, Phu Quoc nuc mam is the Crystal of fish sauces, so much so it's counterfeited here in the states.

Glynda, thanks for the information, especially about how to cross the street!

Silverfox82, I'll be sure to look for the fish sauce.

I love your attitude Dori. I was in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Laos last year and have said repeatedly I would go back to Vietnam in a heartbeat. I definitely preferred the rest of the country over Ho Chi Minh but that's because I'm not that fond of huge cities in general. Crossing the streets is terrifying but you will get the gist of It, confidence is the key. Hoi Ann is very close to Da Nang and a definite must do if you can.

Enjoy the new experiences!

Joan, we will spend half the time in Ho Chi Minh, while DS is working, and do a week somewhere else while he is on Fall Break. It could be Phu Quoc, in Vietnam, or maybe Thailand. He is making those arrangements, so it will be up to him where we go. Wherever, it will be another adventure for Mom and Dad!
