... For those that don't know Angel Island is a popular hiking/tourist spot in the middle of the Bay. ...[/url]
Emphasis added on "the Bay" in the quote above. This sort of reference always cracks me up. As if there is only one Bay so we should all know where "the Bay" is. There is a fairly exclusive neighborhood near me that people who live there refer to as "the valley". Given that I live in Colorado, there are quite a few valleys around. When I'm in the mood to mess with one of them, I will say something like, "You mean you commute all the way from XYZ valley?" where XYZ valley is a couple hundred miles away and not nearly as exclusive a place to live. Anyway, by clicking on the link, I was able to find out where "the Bay" was. :)

Just a shade less pretentious than residents of San Francisco calling it "The City".

For many years Angel Island was to the western equivalent of Ellis Island.

As an immigration station from 1910 to 1940 approximately 1 million Asians passed through Angel Island to begin a new life here in the US.

I know folks of Chinese heritage here in Los Angeles who can trace their families roots back to Angel Island.
