Wy wife's a steeler's fan. It could have been a "lucky night" for me if the Steeler's pulled it out.

So much for my luck. At least I'll get plenty of sleep.

The Broncos were supposed to lose today, but they won. It's a miracle. Tim Tebow did a great job of passing today. Too bad he couldn't do much last week.

Too funny! I wonder if she's long term (one for the thumb era) or more recent. I like Bradshaw, not so much Ben.

The team that won the coin toss, won the game. The NFL overtime rules are a joke. Hopefully someday they will adopt college football overtime rules.

She loves them both but her devotion goes back to the Bradshaw days. We're in NJ but her older brothers were Steeler fans and it rubbed off on her.

Sleep like a baby, waking up every hour crying...

I was from the right side of the state, so as much as I liked the Bradshaw Steelers, I remember Vet Stadium and Roman Gabriel and Ron Jaworski. I still get a kick out of Terry when he is on the Tonite Show. He's a character! Ben, not so much..

After 40+ years of T/S ownership, I am no longer "an owner"
So much for the pundits who said it would be a repeat of last year's Super Bowl. Packers still have a lot of work to do . . . first up the NY Football Giants.

No, the team that tossed an 80 yard TD strike won! The new playoff rules worked perfectly!

I was never a Seahawks fan, but I have felt that the Stealers should have given that Lombardy trophy to the Referee after Super Bowl XL

Damn right!

I stopped watching the NFL for a few years after that b/c I felt (and still do to some degree) that that game was fixed. I still remember the NFL ran a series of commercials during that game with different players holding the Lombardi trophy saying what it would mean to them to win it. EVERY one of those commercials featured a Steeler until finally late in the 3rd quarter they had a Seahawks player. I remember initially thinking that was strange and then with that officiating I became convinced the fix was in. That was the first and to this day only NFL game where I really thought that to be the case.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. As Amp said, the new OT rules worked well -- college teams don't have to go 80 yes to win the game. College rules almost guarantee points w/ little effort.

Maybe this win will shut up some of the Tebow haters.

college football overtimes totally suck. The score at the end of regulation could be 21-21 and the final score could be 49-42. Talk about score inflation.

The only thing that needs to be fixed is the spot of the kickoff in overtime. Prior to 1994, when the spot of the kickoff moved from the 35-yard line to the 30 yard line, the winner of the coin toss has roughly a 53-47% advantage. Now, the winner of the coin toss has a 61-39% advantage due mostly to their field position after the kickoff.

This is the relevant probability chart:

4307790280_cbae747772_o.png

As you can see, the OT winning percentage is about 50% when the initial field position is around the 20 yard line. Move the spot of the kickoff to the 40 yard line and it will be an even game.

I was hoping for a Steelers win, mainly because I figured that would get a more competitive game against the Patriots next week. There was no Tebow magic when NE came to Denver a few weeks ago, I'm not expecting any next week.

In terms of the overtime rules, they stilll s*ck. There is no way that a completely random act (coin toss) should to a large degree decide who wins the game. While the toss at the beginning of the game determines initial kick or receive, and direction, that is balanced the rest of the game (if you receive first half, you kick the second half). So not sure how it's fair that in overtime, you can win the coin toss, and win the game.

If you want to have a "first possession can win the game", then make that an option, like picking direction. If you choice it, then yes, scoring on the first possession can win the game. But if you don't score, then you lose.

At least the last game of the weekend was definitely interesting. Have to admit that Texans-Bengals and to a degree, Giants-Falcons were not exceptionally excitiing. First half of the Saints-Lions game was good (until the Saints blew it open).

I'd say next week, Saints-49er's looking to be best game. Pat's, Packers, Raven's I'd expect would all be touchdown+ favorites.

What karma? they played poorly and lost to a Broncos team that played well. I don't think there was any karma in that. It's what usually happens when those two things happen.

Except for sometimes when one team plays poorly and the other team plays even worse, like that Super Bowl from a few years ago, the one after the '05 season. Then the team that plays worse usually loses.

Hey yinz guys...it's spelled "Steelers", since Pittsburgh was once known as the "Steel City". For more info, visit: http://www.pittsburghese.com/

Thank you Carol. Though I'm not a die-hard football fan, I believe the Steelers deserve respect as a well-run, well-coached team. They were missing key players due to injury which is unfortunate but it's what happens. I'm happy for Tebow, he seems like a great guy. I'm happy for Denver, since my oldest daughter now lives there.

P.S. Right behind my husband in the Pittsburgh airport security line on Saturday was Jerome Bettis, aka The Bus, headed to Atlanta on the same plane as us. He is an example of the caliber of men the Steelers strive to hire. He's HUGE and kindly held a 4 month old baby girl for a photo, dwarfing her even more. She had on a Pittsburgh cheerleader outfit = too cute; wished I'd had my camera1

I've always hated the Broncos and never bought all of the Tebow fanfare when he was in college. But after watching him be subjected to all of the criticism and second guessing this year, I'm really happy to see that kid succeed. Beautiful pass on that last play (long, slow delivery and all).

I think the new OT rules nullify your assertion here.

I don't like the new OT rules -- it really seems like a hack job.

But, I don't like the idea of making already-fatigued players play 10 more minutes no matter what, either. The NFL has been getting serious about player safety recently, and I think that's a good thing. I know a couple "NFL Has-Beens" (their words, not mine). And while they wouldn't trade the experience for anything, they deal with a lot more pain than most people for the rest of their lives.

I think Goodell is getting serious about safety because he wants to expand the season, and no other reason. But at least it's a start.

Besides, it doesn't matter who won that game. They're just Patriots fodder, anyway. :D

Not to turn this into a religious thread, but for the record all the talk about "divine intervention" in regard to Tebow is bunk.

The truth is, God is actually an Ohio State Buckeyes fan. He doesn't really care much for professional sports. :D

Stealers ... as in STEAL a Lombardy trophy, get it?

[BBS Admin hat OFF for the benefit of those who think BBS staff have no right to express their own opinions.]

My, my. Bitter in Spokane aren't we? And, yes, we 'got' it the first time. That was so amazingly clever. Did you think it up all by yourself?

There is almost no game played that you can't point to a few game changing referee calls. I don't see you crying about the crucial pass interference call against the Broncos that was never made yesterday. Had the call been made that close to the goal line, there's a good chance the game never would have gotten to overtime in the first place. That's just the way the game goes. It happens. You suck it up. You move on.

Having been born and raised in Pittsburgh, I am of course a fan of my beloved 'Stillers'. But I honestly never felt they really 'had it' this year. I've been surprised at how far they've gone with the injuries they've sustained. But let's face it -- a team that could barely squeak by this year's Cleveland Browns in the last game of the season didn't stand much of a chance in the playoffs.

But for heaven's sake.. It's just football. It's not worth getting our egos all wrapped up in a knot over.
