My husband has miles on American but I was unable to find a ff seat for our April trip to San Juan. So I purchased 3 tickets and now started to look into upgrading to business class with the miles. The explanation is so confusing on their website. If you have no status with the airline maybe you can by an upgrade but it's not confirmed until 24 hours before the flight?????? Am I understanding that right? Anyone have experience with this? Thanks.

We've had good luck several times, including just recently, in buying our tickets online, and then calling to request mileage upgrades. The fees for upgrading are sometimes a bit much, but then, we have to figure if flying up front is worth it. IT IS! Jean

If you are looking at upgrading with 500 mile stickers and do not have elite status, upgrade availability is only offered at the kiosk at check-in after all of the upgrade requests for status and mileage passengers have been fulfilled. If at that time, there are still seats available, they will be offered at the kiosk check-in.

A good source of information is the flyerquide wiki. Your ability to upgrade is dependent on booking class (I believe O class cannot be upgraded with miles), availabiliity, status, and date/time of upgrade request (in that order I think). Try this...

Thanks for clarification. I was willing to use more miles for the upgrade but couldn't see how to do it online. But I gave them a call and now I'm in business class. Hooray!
