FBI Hacks Into Terrorist's iPhone Without Apple - by Kevin Johnson, Jon Swartz, and Marco della Cava, USA Today/ Apple vs FBI/ News/ USA TODAY/ usatoday.com

"SAN FRANCISCO — Although the government officially withdrew from its battle against Apple Monday, many observers sense the tech privacy war is just getting started.

"This lawsuit may be over, but the Constitutional and privacy questions it raised are not," Congressman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), who had criticized the Justice Department's suit against Apple, said in a statement Monday.

The Justice Department withdrew its legal action against Apple after a method brought to the FBI earlier this month by an unidentified entity allowed investigators to crack the security function without erasing contents of the iPhone used by Syed Farook, who with his wife, Tashfeen Malik, carried out the December mass shooting in San Bernardino that left 14 dead.

FBI Can't Tell Apple How It Unlocked the San Bernardino iPhone - by Mariella Moon/ Latest in Culture/ engadget/ engadget.com

"Because it doesn't own the technique used to crack it open.

The feds might never let Apple in on the secret of the technique they used to unlock the San Bernardino shooter's iPhone 5c. According to Reuters, the hackers who discovered the flaw that led to the FBI's iPhone-cracking tool have the sole legal ownership of the method. Agents might not even know what the vulnerability is or how its resulting hardware works exactly. If you'll recall, a recent Washington Post report revealed that the feds got help from a group of hackers -- from outside the US, Reuters' sources said -- with a history of selling software vulnerabilities to the US government. They were paid a flat fee for the flaw they brought the FBI and the tool they developed...."

FBI Found No New Information on San Bernadino Shooter's iPhone - by Luke Dormehl/ Cult of Mac/ cultofmac.com

"The FBI has had three weeks to examine the unlocked iPhone belonging to San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook, and U.S. law enforcement officials are finally ready to say whether they were able to find anything of use on the handset.

The answer? Not much. Although that’s not the way they’re presenting it..."

Report Offers New Details on San Bernardino Terrorist Attack - by Sari Horwitz and Joel Achenbach/ National Security/ The Washington Post/ washingtonpost.com

"A report released Friday contains chilling new details of the December assault by a husband and wife in San Bernardino, Calif. — the third deadliest attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001 — that left 14 people dead and 22 others seriously injured.

Much of the material in the new study by the Police Foundation and the Justice Department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services has been previously reported by news organizations. But the 135-page report does offer new insight into law enforcement’s response and the frenzied gun battle four hours later, when Syed Rizwan Farook, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, were killed by police..."

San Bernardino Shooting's Signs Have Faded, But Memories Remain Piercing
By Nathan Rott/ Heard on Morning Edition/ Around the Nation/ National Public Radio/ npr.org

"It's been a year since Ray Britain lay on the floor of the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, Calif., feeling the vibrations of the gun shots.

He remembers that "constant tremble," he says, the ringing in his ears, the shell casings — "a rainbow of shell casings" — flying from the gun, and the looks of shock on his coworkers' faces.

It's been a year since Britain survived what was then considered the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks: Fourteen people killed and 22 wounded. But he can remember all of it like it was yesterday...."
