Maybe one of the Tuggers have an idea on this
While I go on with my responsibilities as a registered nurse, I can't stop thinking about how all the airports specially the security areas are being sanitized. I watch the numbers in Canada rise and watch where the people came from, and their origin is all over, random places. The common denominator is the airport. I can't stop thinking about the security area especially the bins, where we dumped our dirty shoes and other belongings. We hold it, sneeze on it etc, etc. Those bins will go through the camera, get stack up and back to the next person. What about the gloves of security people? Do they get changed? Observing them, I did not think so. What about the seats at the gates and everywhere else at the airport? I couldn't reach out to anyone who can enlighten me and satisfy my query regarding sanitation at the airports. I thought about reaching out to the media but I don't even know where to start.
Thank you!

That’s a good reminder of the risk for folks who are still planning to travel.

The TSA, airports and airlines have updated their website to indicate the steps they’re taking to reduce the risk.

For example:

From https://www.tsa.gov/coronavirus

TSA has issued guidance to frontline employees to conduct routine cleaning and disinfecting of frequently touched surfaces and security screening equipment at the TSA security checkpoint. Many airport authorities are also performing additional cleaning of security checkpoints. Employees are encouraged to wash their hands after cleaning and after removing their gloves.
TSA is also taking additional efforts to clean bins, but most importantly, travelers are encouraged to follow CDC guidelines and wash their hands before and after completing the security screening process. Travelers should place personal items such as wallets, keys or phone in their carry-on property to be screened through the X-ray system.
TSA will continue to follow guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and will continue to work with government and industry partners to contain the spread of the virus.

At The Airport
Dulles International Airport follows the guidance provided by public health experts at the federal Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Virginia Department of Health. In addition to supporting federal agencies that operate at the airport, we are:
  • Increasing our use of disinfectant and cleaning in what we call “high touch” areas at the airport, like handrails, escalators, elevator buttons, restroom doors, etc.
    • Coordinating with our airline and tenant partners, passengers and employees to closely monitor any change in the status of our region’s health and to ensure awareness of interagency protocols for handling infectious diseases.
      • Encouraging passengers who are booked on flights that may be impacted by the recent travel restrictions announced on March 11 to contact their airline directly for more information. Flight cancellations and schedule adjustments are made by the airlines.
  • Announcing updates and changes to the status of airport amenities, as follows:
    • Until further notice, the USO Lounge at Dulles International Airport is closed.

I would start with going to the website of your airport. I have been getting A Lot of emails from companies I do business with, saying what they are doing, so I think the info would be prominent.

I think you could call up general info of your nearby airport, tell them what you want to know.

I don't think it would be possible for 100% guaranteed removal, and things you site, the bins, for example. Their gloves, yes, they are protecting themselves and probably wear same pair until they rip or breaktime.

You could wear your own gloves, and it seems makeshift masks are being made from bandanas. I think you need 2 layers of cotton.

I hope you aren't planning to fly any time soon and are just running down a hunch. Frankly, yes, I think airports are massive international germ factories.

Each airport has different conditions and characteristics that separate from others. No two airports have an identical set of rules and regulations

The FAA offers guidelines however, it's in the hands of the states and/or cities how they implemented.

Orange County CA is monitoring cases, up to 42 as of last night, half of them are travel related.

I'm staying away from airports!

Not the airport but the plane:

DD flew up to Spokane from Pensacola last week. Wanting to be cautious, she listened to her mother and brought sanitizer & wipes. I told her to make sure she wiped down the tray table, armrests, etc. She did and the realization of the black wipes when she finished made her realize how dirty the plane is under normal circumstances and was very enlightening that it is something we have not been concerned with before all the pandemic stuff.

I normally am not a germaphobe, I think some exposure is healthy to build the immune system ( in normal circumstances) but in the future when I fly I will be wiping down the areas around my seat

Yup. I've been in 3 USA airports this week with (hopefully) 2 more today SFO and YVR. Nobody is wearing masks or gloves, no sign of sanitation, travellers are all acting oblivious to advisories. My uber driver today was same as all resort guests and staff i talked with... they think it is overblown. It's expected travelling here.

People traveling from where the virus is/has been is how this is spreading to people/places that didn't have it before.
