Nothing new in the article. We do not take many flights per year (6-8) but after an aunt had her luggage lost when travelling to FL for a cruise many years ago I don't take any chances. I take photos of each of the front and sides of our suitcases (checked and carry on if gate checking) showing their luggage tags affixed. We make sure to stick the receipt portion of the baggage tag to our boarding passes and keep them with our passports. Each suitcase (checked & carry-on) as well as personal items, have ID tags on the outside with all our info including our email address and a note to look inside the outside pocket. Then in the outside pocket, inside a 1 qt ziplock freezer bag, is a piece of paper that I have typed our names, home address, destination address along with the dates we will be staying there, our flights (# & airline & date) that we are taking as well as the contact info for all 3 of our kids. I figure if the bag gets lost maybe an airline employee will look for the additional information. I also have the same page inside each of our personal items incase we forget them somewhere.

The outside of all of our bags have a red yarn crocheted thick 'string' tied in knots firmly on both handles. I see lots of bags with ribbon or scarves tied on the handles but loose ends can get caught in the sorting machinery, my ties have about a 1" loose end. A friend of ours went so far as to paint a big white "R" on both sides of his suitcase as it is a very common brand in black -like so many of them are.

Many of the airlines we travel on have a 'track my bag' feature on their app. I find it comforting when I get a notification that my bag has been loaded on the plane. Our oldest DS who flies a lot for work has Apple Air Tags hidden in all of his bags and his brief case.

We both have H last names, so we painted H on the bottom of each black suitcase with white paint. Makes it easy to see on the airport conveyer belt. I had to have a Rick Steves suitcase repaired after one domestic flight (no longer remember what happened) and they wanted me to return the suitcase on their nickel and they’d send me a new one. I said I’d be happy them just covering my $12 luggage repair bill since no one would want a used suitcase with an H and they sent me a check.

Wow you are very trusting putting all that personal data on/in your suitcase. If someone lifts it they would have a field day. Among other things, they could cancel your flight and use info for social engineering scams with your kids, etc.

Well since my bag is so uniquely marked the chance of it mistakenly taken is slim to none and it is just a cheap suitcase, not a Louis Vuitton or Gucci , so not too desirable. My system has been working well for the last few decades that we have been flying to vacations. We are not as paranoid about identity theft in Canada as Americans seem to be.

There is a tradeoff between maximizing identity protection, and maximizing the speedy return of your luggage... I don't include my home address on my luggage, but do have contact details such as email and cell number.

Two weeks ago I flew into Denver. Bag didn’t make it to baggage claim. The UAL app indicated it was at the Denver airport but no specifics as to where. Agent had no additional information. Luckily an AirTag was in the bag & that allowed me to precisely locate where the bag was at the airport so we could obtain it and be on our way.
