As a group, I think they were better than the women, but the strongest performers were still Lisa, Paris, and Mandisa.
The good:
Ace. This guy definitely has it.
Chris Daughtry: he sang his heart out, just great. And if you shut your eyes, you can tell that you'd buy the record based on the voice.
Taylor Hicks: I think he just wants to sing his music on TV; he's a blues and soul guy with a strong following in the deep south.
Sway: I don't get that song, but I think the guy delivered it, sold it. VERY strong in that style.
OK:
Gedeon McKinney. I liked him, but when you sing "Shout" you risk sounding like the other 10,000 people who sang shout before you.
Bucky Covington: Another bar singer. Good, not good enough unless he's writing great songs too.
Patrick Hall (the first guy): He mentioned that he felt lost without his piano. He looked lost, too. Is he good enough? I dunno.
Elliot Yamin: I didn't get him the way the judges did. He was good, he was OK, but I thought the first 4 guys were better. I think he looks goofy.
Not as good:
Kevin Covais. Mary Joan loves him, I don't get it. A weak Irish tenor.
[edited to move the next two guys from the "OK" section to here; I had to look them up to tell them apart]
David Radford (crooner) AND
Will Makar (sang Michael Jackson): Fun in a David Cassidy kind of way, I guess. If they ever made an Archies movie these guys would be a good choice. Flip a coin.
Obvious vote for the worst:
Bobby Bennett. I feel kind of bad for the guy, but not really. He has a great personality and can really entertain, and his singing is good enough to carry him through using it as a sidebar to a different act; a young ethnic Rip Taylor? A west coast Harvey Fierstein? And I mean those in a good way, those are people who made good careers out of entertaining.
