I am planning my summer 2009 week now and I need help from you Tuggers. We live in northeast Ohio (near Cleveland). I am searching for a resort within 1 day driving distance (8 hours or so), that has many attractions (including outdoors stuff, like wate-water rafting, hiking, etc.). We will be taking our two daughters, aged 21 and 17. We were thinking of the Poconos, but do not know which resort is best, or what activities there are to do. A beach would be nice, but I do not want to stay at a hotel overnight or burn too much $4.00/gal. gas (or whatever it may cost next summer). Do any tuggers have any ideas; and if the Poconos are one of them, which place should I check out and what activities are available. Help!

Has your family ever been to the Smokey Mts. Lots of hiking in the National Park. River rafting/tubing about 45 min away. Shows/entertainment, Dollywood etc. If thats too commercialized how about Massanuttan Resort in Virginia. Check out there website--they have alot of activities w/out ever leaving the resort. My kids enjoyed hiking in the Shenedoah Natioanal Park/Blue Ridge Parkway. Also went inner tubing on a nearby river--resort ran a bus. There is a water park on site etc--too many activities to list. Dawn

We went to Gatlinburg last year. It turned out much better than I expected. The white water rafting was the highlight of our trip. But it was very commercialized, and the Wife does not want to go back next year. We are trying to get a good mix of nature, activities and location (if such a location exists!). I prefer a beach, but I know that involves a lot of driving. Any beach areas relatively close (exclude Myrtle Beach or HHI, been there recently)?

Looking for a t/s?

If not, you might consider the very close by Hocking Hills area-canoeing, ziplining, horseback riding and great hiking. As far as beach resorts, Virgina Beach and the outer banks of NC could work for you and there are t/s there. West Virginia is only 5 hours away with hiking and white water rafting.
