Advice please in case of hurricane

This is the first time that we have visited Florida at this time of year (from UK where we have no experience of hurricanes) and I am curious about what will happen if there is a hurricane threatening. I assume the authorities will evacuate everyone to a safe building? We are staying at Marriotts Grande Vista then Disney Sarasota Springs with 3 small children.

Can anyone explain what the usual procedure is for tourists and, if evacuated to a safe place, what should we take with us?

Vary rarely does hurricanes reach the Orlando area since it's central Florida. You will find that most people leave the coastal areas and move towards Orlando.

Orlando doesn't evacuate since it's inland. Coastal residents come to Orlando when hurricanes come in.

We were in Orlando in 2004 when Hurricane Jean came through. The Disney resorts went on lock down and we were told to stay in our room until the hurricane had passed. Other family members were at Grande Vista and they were told to stay in their rooms, too, until the danger had passed. The day after the hurricane, it was beautiful weather. Most of the Disney parks were opened back up, too. We saw quite a bit of debris and trees uprooted/downed, but everything was business as usual within a day.

There's no way I would want to be on the coast during a hurricane, though. Storm surge is scary stuff.

Many people from Winter Haven go up to Disney to stay in Disney Hotels when our power is out. Disney seems to come back on line sooner.

Suggest stocking up on food & drinks that do not require refrigeration in case the power goes out. Flashlight and extra batteries comes in handy. Or maybe candles and matches.
