My wife and I have been searching for an annual beach vacation resort. Hawaii has been our preferred location but it has been several years since we have been to the islands. Our problem is many of our friends and family can't afford the trip plus I am not crazy about the late night flights back, not to mention the trip is not easy on our budget.

As of now we love Panama City Beach and Destin as our beach destination. We went their for the first time last summer and have already booked a trip for next summer. We love the clear water and we can use our Southwest credit card to get free flights. I love the Wyndham Panama City Beach resort as it is an easy walk to a couple of restaurants we really like and every unit has a beach front view. We will split our time between Destin and PCB as we also loved Destin. I bought a CA resale to give us an edge in booking and have been thinking of getting a Wyndham PCB Vacation resale if it ever comes up.

Before I would by at a specific property I want to check out a couple of other options and from what I have read I think we may really like Myrtle Beach. We enjoy family orientated shows such as you would find in Branson Missouri and it appears Myrtle Beach would have similar shows. I really love places where you can eat and have a drink right on the beach and if we can walk to such places all the better.

So this leads me to ask some questions about the Myrtle Beach resorts. I seems like the boardwalk would be an area I would like, but none of the Wyndham resorts are that close. We will probably book at the Sea Watch Plantation, mainly because it is 10 miles closer to the MB boardwalk and my guess closer to the theaters. The membership directory states it is on restaurant row so are the restaurants on the beach or set back a bit?

There are a few Wyndham resorts in North Myrtle Beach so do many of you prefer that area and if so why? I admit I am starting to really look forward to the MB vacation even though it is a couple of years away. If we really like it then we would have to consider a resale purchase at one of the resorts. So any thoughts appreciated, especially from those of you that can compare Myrtle Beach with Destin and PCB.

Seawatch is usually the 1st booked solid Wyndham resort ... WHY? The newer OCEAN BLVD (the 4 towers) resorts require MORE points but have cheaper MFs .. except the MB resorts "enjoy" regional ARP.

Getting summer weeks at Seawatch is a crap shoot on the phones at 13 months out.

JMHO ....

Much easier to book the summer weeks at Pompano Beach, FL .. good flights into FLL which is 12 miles from airport.

So even owners can have trouble booking there!

So if you buy at one MB resort you have priority booking with all MB resorts? We don't have to book in the summer, if we did it would be the last week of May. Is September still a good time at MB as far as weather and booking?

I guess North MB is about 20 miles from the boardwalk, are there nice areas with places to eat and drink right on the beach?

We own at Ocean Blvd and have stayed iat all the MB area resorts. Sea Watch is nice and has poolside bar and lots of planned activities. There are many places (restaurants, Tanger Mall, Alabama Theater, golf courses, etc) to go nearby but you pretty much need to drive to get to them. Ocean Blvd and The Cottages are a short walk from Main Street in Ocean Drive section of NMB. Lots of clubs in this area where you can get a drink, hear beach music, and dance. In season, they also have amusement park w/ rides, etc. Towers on the Grove is a couple miles north in the Cherry Grove section of NMB. It is a smaller resort but is within walking distance to a small beach music club and also a combination grocery/deli and an ice cream shop. Almost forgot Westwinds... older resort but nice. It is located in the Windy Hill section of NMB, north of Sea Watch and south of Ocean Blvd. Very near Barefoot Landing (but car still needed) which has lots of shops and restaurants. Also Alabama Theater and Alligator Adventure and House of Blues. The boardwalk in Myrtle Beach and "Broadway at the Beach" are a 15 - 30 minute ride from the various resorts. May and September are nice times to visit. Watch out in May, though... several different "bike weeks" held in May and if you're not a biker you might not find that very enjoyable. Mid September is SOS Fall Migration. Google that to get better understanding. It's all about beach music and the dance that goes along with it, The Shag. We love NMB... been going there all my life!

Yes, the MB area is well known for extensive golf options, plenty of family-friendly entertainment (similar to Branson MO and Pigeon Forge TN), and miles of soft sand beaches accessible to the public.

Starting up at Cherry Grove Pier, it's less than a mile to walk to Towers on the Grove, the Wyndham resort furthest from the action in MB with a wide quiet beach. The resort is pretty new and you may book your room by category for oceanfront, ocean view (from the side) or neither. Very limited number of restaurants, quite casual, within walking distance but North Myrtle Beach does have many restaurants, mostly inland.

Ocean Blvd is next, about 2 miles down the beach from Towers. Again, at Ocean Blvd, you may reserve oceanfront, ocean (side)view or neither. This resort has a small, casual bar & grill with indoor seating and a wall of windows facing the ocean. The resort offers 4 towers, several pools, plentiful amenities and a rather bustling urban vibe. The beach itself is not crowded here because most other properties are privately owned, low rise. For the most part, you would drive to restaurants, though there's at least one oceanfront hotel nearby with a sitdown restaurant.

A block behind Ocean Blvd, you'll find the Cottages - nice and large but none are ocean side.

Next, Westwinds is located over 3 miles drive south toward MB. It's older and smaller with fewer onsite amenities. But the great majority of rooms here are oceanfront or ocean view. If you just want a comfortable base for a beach-centered vacation on a fairly uncrowded beach, it's an excellent choice.

About a third of the way down between Westwinds and SeaWatch, your inland drive on Rte 17 will take you past Barefoot Landing, a shopping, restaurant and entertainment district surrounding a small lake and bordering a section of the intracoastal waterway. Alabama Theatre is also on this stretch of 17, as are the Myrtle Beach Mall, many restaurants, WalMart, and the Tanger Outlets.

From Westwinds to SeaWatch, it's about a 5 mile drive. SeaWatch is actually in Myrtle Beach proper. This stretch of beach is more developed than North MB but not as honky-tonk as the original MB area around the boardwalk and pavilion area.

We have preferred the quieter, wider beaches in NMB, which also generally has less car and motorcycle traffic, and fewer crowds of teens and college kids, than we've found in MB. We've enjoyed our stays at Towers on the Grove, Ocean Blvd, and Westwinds and we would return to any of them. Our first stay at SeaWatch will be this fall. The older part of MB is a few miles further south down the beach from SeaWatch. Inland from there, you'll find Broadway at the Beach, and most of the area's show theaters.

We don't eat at restaurants every night so driving a couple extra miles doesn't matter to us, especially when we are out for other sightseeing as well. Others may disagree but we've found the beach sand to seem a little finer, less pebbly, in NMB. MB and Murrell's Inlet, just south of MB seem to be a little to have narrower, slightly steeper beachfront, so a little extra turbulence may account for the difference we've noticed in the sands. We've rented sailboats in Murrell's Inlet.

FYI, the sand in Gulf Shores AL (and I'm told, in Destin/PCB) is a little finer, more powdery and whiter, than the sand in MB/NMB, IMO. Also, Gulf Shores/Destin/PCB all benefit from sunsets over the ocean and warmer Gulf waters. MB/NMB does not have ocean sunsets, though if you're a morning person, the sunrises are gorgeous. Also, some folks prefer the Atlantic surf on the Carolina Coast to the calmer waves of the Gulf. HTH! :)

Thank you for the info, I would like .....

just one restaurant with some charm and within walking distance from the resort would be all I need. Sometimes the family wants to spend an entire day at the beach but I don't, but of course they could just walk from the resort while I drive.

I just found out some old friends of ours are selling their home and plan on moving to the MB area. So now we will actually know someone living in the area.

I know we will prefer the clear waters and fine white sand of the Florida panhandle area but I think being able to see shows will be fun as well. We have a 210000 CA contract but would like to sell our Bonnet Creek and Cyprus Palms ownerships for either the Wyndham PCB Vacation resort or a MB resort.

If you will be going in May or September you can use your current contracts to book there. No need to use ARP.
