Unfortunately too many people have taken advantage.

People can bring a doll or stuffed animal or blanket.

Forget animals, bring booze for emotional support.
I believe you can buy alcohol post-TSA on the concourse.

If you need an animal to keep your emotional balance in check at 35,000 feet, then maybe you need to think about driving. It's way to cramped for me to be sandwiched in a row sitting inches away from a dog.

Not to mention that some of us are terribly allergic to dogs and cats.

It's also a money issue for the airlines. They still will let you take your cat (even in the cabin) but you will have to pay vs having to accept without a fee due to medically diagnosed emotional issues.

Effective March 1,2021 Southwest Airlines will not allow emotional support animals on their aircraft.
Only trained service animals that meet the new DOT guidelines will be allowed on their aircraft

You mean compared to the hygienically challenged human being or perhaps someone's undisciplined, disruptive offspring.
