Hi, I am trying to schedule a trip to Acapulco. I have some weeks banked in RCI, that I should try to use up....so my question is for those who have been to Acapulco, what do you think are the best resorts to pick and why?

Also any thoughts on what to do and not miss, would be appreciated....thanks in advance...

I am one of the few who still travel to Acapulco...it's no longer the 'rage'
like it was way back when...but I still like it.

I own at an unusual resort called Club Playa del Secreto. It is currently managed by the Park Royal Group -- and their units are all - inclusive.
But the original Club Playa owners still have the choice NOT to do all-inclusive and this goes for the people who trade into there.

I have stayed in downtown (but up in the hills) at a place called Villa Vera and I liked it a lot. But that is not a place for children.

If you are a family with children, hands down it would be the Mayan Palace, but be prepared to spend a lot of money on food. They have a captive audience because it is a long way into town and their kitchens are pretty much non-existent.

There are many other timeshares located in the downtown area, but I wouldn't want to stay in that area.

I've heard several Grand Mayan owners say that their favorite Grand Mayan is in Acapulco. I've also heard that it's difficult to get into, however if you trade in I bet you'll have better luck!

I love the Grand Mayans, but I haven't been to this one.

I have never been to Acapulco. However, we have had an excellent experience with Grand Mayan and with Fiesta Americana in other locations. We are planning a trip to Acapulco in the next three years and those are the only two resorts TSs we are considering.

I have learned a great deal from you previous posts. I look forward to hearing about your experience in Acapulco. You are very reliable source of information.

Well, my goodness, my head is swelling, thank you so much for the kind words. I am happy that I have contributed valuable information to some, that makes me feel really good, and especially today as I received some very disturbing news from states so not in best of mood so to say. Thanks again, you cheered me up a bit...

Now the good news ( without the head swelling) LOL I booked Grand Mayan in Acapulco today........I am pretty excited...:whoopie:

I know it is kind of far out, but we drive, so was thinking that will be okay....then I go on Trip advisor and everyone talking about not driving in Acapulco. Not sure how to take it all, since most do not live in Mexico and yes it can be daunting to drive here and yes there is corruption and crime as there is everywhere just maybe more blatant here. Tried to talk ot hubby in regards to such but he is in states and dealing with the disturbing news ( no death or health issues, so will be okay), but not interested in hearing about this now..LOL. So anyway I'll put another post on here and also on my local weboards in regards to driving in Acapulco etc....we can of course use taxis, but we have to drive there and back...:wall:

Anyway it is a done deed....must have been meant to be, cause is first time I have been able to do anything on RCI..since the new and improved, enhanced site....:hysterical: ( actually if it worked, I would not mind it so much!!!)

So May 2009, off to Acapulco , then following week in Ixtapa, and you can bet I'll write a review of our experience. I'll be sure to pay special attention to Grand Mayan in ACA, so I can tell you all about it....:hi:

Hooray for you!

I can't wait to hear all about it.

We want to see what all the rave is about.

We want to know if it's just the area, or if it really is a "special" Grand Mayan.

Acapulco Driving

Pammex - Wouldn't worry about driving too much. We did it 2 yrs ago with no problems. BTW we live in a small town on an island in Alaska w/39 miles of road - so not like we're huge freeway drivers or anything. Were staying at the Mayans - prebooked car before we went - much cheaper. Mayan is, as usual, out a ways so will pay off as opposed to taxi fare if you like to get out a bit. There is an interesting roundabout as you go downhill and enter the city but if your watching for it and prepared it's no big deal.
Have fun - we sure did!

Great, I think we will be fine then, we drive in the second largest city in Mexico so not concerned about traffic and such....and most of the posts of problems with policia are with rental cars and we will have our own car, driving from Chapala to Acapulco and then well from Grand Mayan to wherever we go...LOL.

An interesting round about??? do you mean like a circle area with cars entering from all directions? If so that is called a glorieta in Mexico,,,if you are refering to one of those , they can be confusing sometimes, but we have them all over Guad, so should not be a problem....

If you did it and you are not used to driving in Mexico and such..and had no police problems, then hey we sure can do it, I guess...maybe the police corruption has gotten worse in last few years....whatever and anyway, the vacation is booked so we are going and will be driving....we'll play it by ear on driving into city and parking and all, if too much we'll just park at Walmart and catch cab from there.....thanks for your input, greatly appreicated.

Any tips, things to do or see you would be willing to share with me???

We just got back from a week in Acapulco at Mayan Palace (not Grand). The building is soon to be torn down (and good riddance). But the Grand Mayan bldg looked great! The beach there is gorgeous and huge. The most fun thing we did is when we hooked up with a hotel employee who, on his day off, takes guests out on his own boat ($65). He drove us to Puerto Marquez, just down the road, gave us a boat tour of that bay, then went around the whole Acapulco bay, over to Isla Roqueta, went snorkeling there, ate at a restaurant there, went over to see the afternoon cliff-divers show, back to Puerto Marquez for some jet-skiing (!), then got driven back to the hotel. A memorable day! The only problem with Mayan Palace there is lack of restaurant choices, at the hotel and in the area in general (without taking a taxi all the way into town).
