I've been a member of AARP for about 12 years.. The membership fees are relatively inexpensive; but do i really need it? I can't remember one time I've benefitted from being a member.. When i receive the magazine, it winds up in the garbage after skimming through pages..How about you? Thx

not for us

No value for us. They have a self serving interest and we got lots of junk mail originating from their mailing list. [Political comment deleted - DeniseM Moderator]

I've used their hotel discounts from time to time. Sometimes I've been asked to enter my AARP number when making a reservation, most times I haven't. I've never been asked to show my card when checking in.

I always wonder where a non-profit's profits go.
They're big in the Part D drug plan business, but when I comparison shopped a few years ago for a parent they were not the best.

As I gaze into my crystal ball, I see a short life for this thread. AARP is a powerful lobby of people with a clear agenda. Looking out for the benefits of the elderly. Either you are one or with luck you will be. If you feel you don't need an advocate, fine. Don't send them a few of your shekels.

I enjoy the magazine (the largest circulation one in the world). I have used their discounts at hotels and car rental desks. I don't knowingly buy anything I find on stiff paper insert cards and their 'offers' for insurance aren't 'deals' in my book, but I will continue to subscribe and provide them my modicum of support.

I've been a member of AARP for quite a few years too, primarily for their discounts. Typically their travel discounts are the same as AAA, but not always. Check both and take the best deal.

I agree with the National Car Rental comment, The AARP deal with National, along with a mousesavers.com emerald card, was the best by a long ways when we picked up a car in Orlando and dropped it off in Nashville. The savings on that trip alone will pay our AARP dues for many years.

I frequently use their discounts - When I remember, I'll ask if there's a discount for AAA, AARP, Public Television, etc etc - often the discount is the same, but sometimes one is more than the others.

I like the magazine.

What Jim said.

And if you don't want the junk mail, call them and ask to be removed from their lists. Worked like a charm.

I do enjoy their travel discounts for car rentals, cruises and hotels.
I used one for Norweigian which beat even NCL's early-bird sale.

Their personal finance tips and tools are simplistic, but I have used 'em.

I like that its an organization dedicated to looking out for us gray-hairs.

really, largest circulation in the world? beyond Reader's Digest or National Geographic?

I had no idea they even HAD a magazine! But I am so far too young to know much about em anyway. Good thread.

When I was turning 25, someone at AARP took a weird look at some info somewhere, and decided I was turning 55...and I got *swamped* with mail for membership offers, Medicare supplements, hover-round vehicles, etc.

I was traumatized enough to face moving out of the 18-24 demo, did I really need this kind of confirmation that I was getting old? Jeez, people!

(I only escaped the horror by moving, since AARP couldn't confirm where they originally had gotten the bad birth date info...) :wall:

Non/Not-for-Profit Profits

Non (not-for) profits can make profit so long as:
(1) the profit they make goes to support the exempt purpose for which they have rec'd their IRS exemption from income tax . . . and
(2) whatever profit they derive that is outside of the scope of their mission is appropriately reported and tax paid on it at the standard corporate rate.

An example would be one 501c3 NFP that I managed also had office rental income and association management service fees. We reported that income and paid the appropriate corporate taxes on the net income (profit).

Hope that helps.

AARP Membership Value

I have received decent discounts that have more than offset the membership fee for AARP. That said, my DH hates that we support them with a dime of our money given their political agenda. (Won't say any more)

They have a discount of 40% at Reebok/Rockport outlet stores. I have used that. I was not aware of the National car rental discount. Need to try that.
Pretty cheap dues for 2 people.

Wow - I guess I'd better check out their discount list!
