So I called AARP today to see if my membership was still active. (I'm mid-fifties "junior" member.) I got voice mail of course, the problem was the sound of the recording was so loud I had to hold the phone away from my ear! Guess my hearing is not bad enough yet to be a true AARP member.

What's that, Sonny? Your earings have fallen to the floor?
I don't see how the AAA can help you there. ;)

AARP? What's that? Another Almost Retired Person? Another Awesome Retired Person?

You have to laugh so you don't cry...

My Dad is hard of hearing. He was talked into switching to a Verizon home connect system. The other night I was talking to him and there was so much static I couldn't understand a word he was saying.

The next day I called Verizon and explained, they got a tech to call and trouble shoot. They were very helpful but ended up not being able to find anything wrong with the phone. They said he could send the system in to have it checked out, but it would be $500 if nothing was wrong. However, the phone is working fine now. It was a mystery why the connection was so bad the night before.

Then his significant other tells me the night before when the static was so bad, that he was laying in bed with his CPAP machine on while talking to me on the phone.

I'm rather offended. A local group is offering a free dinner and show for senior citizens age 55 plus. I think they should drop the word senior. I doubt anyone in their 50s will go when labeled like that.

Are you kidding? When my wife hit her mid-50's, she couldn't wait to join AARP and get her senior discounts! You underestimate the power of the bargain hunter.

I'll say - my husband asks routinely for discounts - he's 55.

Reminds me of the Tom Paxton song. I couldn't find a video of him performing it, but here's the lyrics:

Modern Maturity

(Before 2002, the AARP Magazine was called Modern Maturity)

To the kids behind the counter at fast food restaurants, anyone over 40 must look "senior."

Occasionally, I'm given a senior discount without asking
... even though I'm a youthful 56 and likely do not qualify.
