After checking in at Hilton Grand Vacation Sunrise Lodge last night, we discovered Park City, Canyons, Deer Valley, Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Beaver Creek (pretty much all northern Utah ski resorts) announced closure starting today for at least a week, to be revisited later. I was told all the Vail-managed (Epic pass) resorts were closing. Good thing skiing wasn't the main reason we came. Restaurants in Park City are to ban sit-down service (but will still offer to-go/pickup orders).

Taos Ski Valley is closing for the rest of their season. Ski Santa Fe still open, they are monitoring.

All ski resorts in Colorado are closed by order of our governor.

Is there something about ski culture that allows ski resorts to be hit hard by coronavirus? Cortina, Zermatt, Aspen. A gang of Australian knuckleheads tested positive in Aspen and several refused to self-quarantine, at least initially.

Is there something about ski culture that allows ski resorts to be hit hard by coronavirus?

Riding in a packed gondola or tram or a 4-6 place chairlift with a bunch of strangers from anywhere in the world or eating in a crowded dining facility with the same folks is a really good way to come in close contact with a potentially infected person.

Basically impossible to avoid unless you ride alone which is completely impractical

Same for the in town scene.

Cheers

As x3 mentioned, ski resorts are a magnet for travelers from all over the world. Since a very large percentage of the people who are in the ski resort / town are visitors, they don't have much choice but to eat and drink in crowded bars and restaurants -- and at this time of year the ski resorts are extremely crowded in Colorado and Utah for spring breakers. Seems like a definite increased risk area.

We were supposed to go to Sun Peaks on Saturday. Got a week through II. Figured it would be a pretty low risk holiday. Ski together eat mainly in our room etc. but they are now closing most ski hills. Sun Peaks closed today Lake Louise, Whistler we assume Sunshine will follow as our Prime Minister has closed national parks.

Ski resorts suddenly shutter

By Rebecca Tobin / Hotels / Travel Weekly / travelweekly.com / Mar 16, 2020

“On March 14, skiers and snowboarders at Smugglers’ Notch ski resort in northern Vermont were lining up at the Sterling lift and dining at the Black Bear Tavern like it was a regular Saturday.

But that evening was anything but normal in the ski industry. While Smugglers’ Notch remained open, Vail Resorts shuttered its 37 mountain resorts and retail, effective immediately until March 22 due to concerns over the spread of Covid-19, and said it would use the time to assess the rest of the season. Lodging and property-management operations would remain open for current bookings, but no new bookings will be taken....”

The Austrian ski town that spread coronavirus across Europe.
If you skied at a big-name resort in the last month and show symptoms, perhaps you should consider getting tested for coronavirus.

FWIW we were skiing in Switzerland not far from this resort at about the same time. Crowded cable cars, restaurants. Thankfully no illness or symptoms. So not all ski resorts affected.
