It's always hard to judge things without knowing all the facts and circumstances but I would not wish the fate of these people on anyone, even if what they do is despised by everyone.
The workers may not understand the criminality of what they are doing. They get a job and do what they are assigned. The Mexican government needs to get a spine. Who would the kidnappers likely be, and why?

Probably employees of the cartel that was raided by a different cartel. Theses cartels probably need people that speak English to defraud Americans. I think the employees know who and whats going on.
If that statement were true, no one would ever work for any cartel. You logic is flawed. When people are desperate for a job to put food on the table for their families, they will certainly knowingly work for a shady outfit.
These guys were good at what they did: "The FBI revealed in March that the criminal group had scammed about 600 individuals out of $39.6 million through fraudulently selling or renting their time shares in 2022."
You might be right. One observation is that this doesn't happen too often to Americans and probably happens more often if the person is connected to cartel activity.

Come on. Did they know? The article said the call center ‘could‘ be linked to a cartel, so I doubt the mom and her kids knew. Who says the employees were desperate?
