Just got this email.

Buy up to 100,000 points get 50% more.

150,000 points for $1250. Not sure if that's good.

Not a good deal.

150K Bonvoy points for $1,250 works out to $0.008333/point. Most commentators value Bonvoy points at $0.007 - $0.0075. So not only would you be overpaying by 10-15%, but you would also be taking on the risk of Marriott's annual devaluations of Bonvoy points.

Of course, if you need a small number of points for a specific purpose (travel package, a specific reservation, etc.), it could make very good sense.

I looked this morning. Not a very good deal. Easiest way to judge is to look at a 3 night stay in a 50k per night room. Would that room cost more than $1250?

I think the best way to get Bonvoy points is to buy explorer packages.

Haven't researched Bonvoy to much yet but will have to learn the system.

I guess it's like anything, you need to figure the ins and outs to really make it work in your favour.

only good if you need to secure points for near term plan. It is the highest discount they offer. I've bought a few thousand points here or there to secure a big ticket package because otherwise it's likely not worth it.

There is also the opportunity cost of not earning Bonvoy points on the room rate itself, which varies based on your Marriott Bonvoy status.

This is fine when redeeming your earned points, but makes purchasing points even less attractive.

Best used, as already mentioned, as a top up when you have most, but are short a few points for an upcoming stay.
