Thanks for the Post.

We have some math wizards on this board. I would be interested in a hypo using 148,000 Westin StarOptions which is roughly 60,000 Star Points with a maintenance fee of $1650 a year. I noticed there was a maximum amount of points that can be converted, so assume the above facts and just pro rate the transaction to match the facts. I did an off the cuff evaluation and the results did not seem to equate to a much better deal than paying my air fair and of course us airways is not my first choice, but perhaps they are in alliance that offers a better carrier for me. I figured a savings of $200 and a lot of effort. If my calculations are correct, then as usual I will use Westin TS as a TS week.

I also received this email earlier this evening and I expect to once again transfer StarPoints to the US Air program. However, I will not be using points earned from converting a timeshare ownership. Some will say it's worthwhile, but it all depends how you will use the miles. Is a business class ticket worth more to you than a week at your home resort for the 148k SOs? It may be for some, and not for others.

I've redeemed the US Air miles for United flights to Hawaii in the past, and that was a good value for me. Those are the only domestic flights I would use miles on, and only in certain circumstances, while primarily using miles for business class seats abroad. In my case, I take 60,000 StarPoints and convert to US Air... 60k -> 75k courtesy SPG x 50% = 112,500 US Air miles. For 112,500 I believe you can use the Star Alliance redemption options to fly on another partner carrier business class to Europe, but not sure it's enough any longer to fly business to Asia, middle east, etc. It's good to have a plan on how you will use the miles before transferring, and especially converting your StarOptions, since the airline miles will devalue over time if not used.

RichardL, ... It depends on your Elite level and the cost of the Starpoints.

As an example, if I converted a year of Platinum WKV and I am 5 Star Elite, my cost is about $1,450, there is no cost for converting for a 5 Star Elite and 5 Star Elites get a 10% bonus when converting. My options would get me 79,200 Starpoints.

Today I converted 60K Starpoints to US Air miles. Starwood gave me 15K Starpoints as a bonus for the transfer. My 75K Starpoints would normally get me 75K US Air miles. However, US Air gives me an additional 50% and I end up with 112.5K US Air miles (75K + 37.5K).

100K US Air miles will get me a round trip business class ticket to Europe or South America on a Star Alliance carrier. My investment in converted WKV MF would be less than $1.1K ($1,450 X 60/80). IMO, $1.1K is a very good price for a round trip business class ticket (plus) to a place like Istanbul or Buenos Aires on a Star Alliance carrier. And, my back will thank me for not going coach. ... eom

This is a good deal for those with Starpoints, as airline transfers are a good value with them (not so much with other hotel programs), especially if you transfer in multiples of 20k Starpoints.

US Airways has better availability than many of the airlines.

First Class on US Airways isn't as nice as on other airlines, but it's close enough (especially on international flights) and if you're not a frequent flyer you probably won't notice/know the difference.

Has anyone done this? I'm wondering how quickly Starwood converts to US Airways miles. The fine print says that US Airways is not responsible if the conversion does not occur within the specified time period.

:ponder:

Starwood usually accomplishes within 3 business days but depending on the FF program (AA updates Tuesday nights) you may not see it in your "account" for up to 2 weeks.
The E-mail seems to say activity date (from Starwood?) versus post date to account ie by April 10th.

The eligibility activity date is defined as the date Starwood recorded it as occurring when USAir receives the transfer. It is not necessarily the date the request for the transfer occurs. Starwood immediately sends you a confirmation of the request for the transfer. In my experience, the date of the actual transfer given to USAir can be as much as a week later than the date of the actual request for a transfer. (Usually on a Monday for the previous week's transfer request.)

Today is Sunday, March 25. The last eligible activity date is March 31 (this coming Saturday). Any transfers not requested yet are probably at some slight risk of late recording by Starwood on its books. But, I think Starwood books the transfer requests as quickly as possible. Salty
