Congratulations to Stephanie Chatterjee for her review on the Big Cedar Wilderness Club.

Here is a copy of the review for all to see as an example of what resort reviews win the quarterly award!

We were pleased to get a fairly short notice trade into Big Cedar. We were placed in a two bedroom lock-off in Long Creek Lodge (removed from public view). This was located on the ground floor which is actually one floor down when approaching the building from the front. The back of the unit, however, was on ground level. The units were clean and well kept. The resort is very themed and in that way reminded us of some of the Disney resorts. The furniture was good quality and in good repair with ample use of the rustic – stuffed deer heads and fish on the walls and that type of country or rustic plaques etc. While we found the units very nice they do not have some of the upgraded finishes of some top resorts. For instance, the counter tops were Formica in both the kitchen and bathrooms. The shower stall in the master bath was a fiberglass unit that was perfectly nice – just not a fancy, granite lined, multi-headed affair. The kitchen was nice with all the amenities you would expect – pots and pans, place settings for six, nice glass mixing bowls, glasses and wine glasses. There was a supply of coffee which could be supplemented each evening by the “cookie lady” if needed. There was a nice dining area with seating for six with three chairs on one side of the table and a bench on the other. The living room had an upholstered sofa and a leather chair, coffee table and TV & stereo in an armoire. There was a sliding glass door from the back of the LR to the patio which was relatively small with a table and four chairs taking up most of the space. Even on the ground floor there was a lovely view of the lake.

The master bedroom was very spacious with a chair, TV armoire, king sized bed with a nicer spread. The sheets were average quality but the blanket (always a little yucky I think) was sandwiched between two sheets. We found the bed to be comfortable. There is one sink, the closet and the whirlpool tub in this room as well. The tub is blocked from direct view of the bedroom by a sort of “pony wall”. There is a nice complement of toiletries presented at this sink and on the edge of the tub. Through a door is the bathroom containing the shower stall, toilet, and another sink. This was a fairly large room with two doors so that it could be accessed from the main part of the unit as well as the bedroom. There is a window in this room that faces the outdoor corridor but it has frosted glass which I thought was nice – it allowed natural light while maintaining privacy.

The studio side of the unit was spacious with a kitchenette containing an under counter fridge, microwave, two burner stove top, sink and all the needed pots, pans and dishes. I believe it also has a dishwasher. My six year old was thrilled to have his own kitchen… There was a king size bed with the same linen arrangement as listed above, a sofa (a pullout I believe – we did not use that way) and a round table with two chairs. The back wall of this 2nd bedroom unit also had a sliding door to an identical patio with the same lovely view. All of these patio doors were equipped with effective black-out drapes. In this unit there was a sink with toiletries in the main area with a separate room containing the toilet and tub/shower combination. There were lots of towels in both of these units. We thought the units were charming and really enjoyed the theme.

I can’t really say enough about the grounds. They were beautiful. There is wonderful access to Table Rock Lake and the various water features and ponds on the grounds are so nice. There are currently three pools and we were told they are building another one. The lazy river is the nicest one I’ve been on – it’s very long and nicely designed and landscaped. The pool and lazy river on the timeshare side both have a slide. They are not big slides but our kids enjoyed both of them very much. Also note that the pool in the timeshare section is indoors. In nice weather the wide doors are open giving it an outdoor sort of feel without having to worry about sunscreen. The other two pools are very attractive, maybe nicer than the indoor pool although none are really lesser in quality. The lounge chairs and cushions are nicer on the hotel side of the resort. Many of the resort activities take place at the Swimming Hole pool which is located on the hotel side of the resort and they do have some nice activities such as the dive-in movie at the pool, a jelly bean tasting contest, fishing for kids at one of the ponds all of which were complimentary. There were also some activities with a fee – we had intended for the kids to make a few of these but never got around to them so I can’t comment. There is also a very nice – although pretty tough – mini golf course on-site. You could pick-up balls and clubs at the Swimming Hole pool. You could also check out basket balls, badminton and tennis equipment at the bar there. At different times we took out paddle boats, canoes and rented a motor boat at the marina. There was never a shortage of equipment while we were there and the staff was helpful. We enjoyed all of the amenities we experienced at the marina. The marina also has a small market. Not huge but much better than at some resorts we have been to in both price and selection.

There were three restaurants open while we were there the steak house which we did not try, Truman’s – a deli style sandwich shop, and Devil’s Pool – a moderate all around place. We had the breakfast buffet at Devil’s Pool which I thought was nicer than an average buffet with scrambled eggs and potatoes. They had both an omelet and waffle station in addition to a wide variety of other hot foods (including those scrambled eggs) and a nice cold selection as well. Our dinner at Devil’s Pool was good – nothing to write home about but a nice meal at fairly reasonable prices. We had lunch at Truman’s the sandwich place one day and the staff was very nice and the food good.

The resort is about 12 miles from Branson and we did go into town one day. We went on the Duck Ride – which was OK. The route was not very scenic – included the Branson trailer park – but the captain was a character and we enjoyed it. There is some nice shopping at Branson’s Landing as well as several restaurant choices. We did not eat in town – other than snacks.

We were at Big Cedar from (removed from public view) and really enjoyed our stay. It is about a five hour drive which is not too bad and we will look forward to a return trip in the future. We give the resort a 9.
