Delta Airlines announced that the baggage fees for passengers who purchased tickets on or after July 31, 2008, for travel on or after August 5, 2008 are increasing. You're still (for now) allowed 1 checked-in bag per person for domestic flights and 2 per person for international flights. The increases only affect coach, non-elite passengers. Business/First class and elite Delta flyers are still allowed 3 bags per person.
Remember, the fees quoted are each way and bags must weight less than 50 pounds or they'll incur an additional fee (see below).
Travel within the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico
Bag 2 - $50
Bag 3 - $125
Bags 4—10 - $200 each
Travel outside the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico
Bag 2 - no fee
Bag 3 - $200
Bags 4 & 5 - $350
Bags 6—10 - $600
Overweight Fees
For travel within the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico
51–70 pounds - $90 each
71–100 pounds - $175 each
Over 100 pounds - not permitted
For travel outside the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico
51–70 pounds - $150 each
71–100 pounds - $300 each
Over 100 pounds not permitted

I'd be very surprised if the other airlines didn't follow suit soon. Unless you have status or fly 1st class, I'd highly advise buying the lightest luggage you can find during EOS clearances and a good luggage scale.
Happy Traveling!
