[ 2024 to present ] Online U.S. Passport renewals are now available

This is in part why I renewed as soon as I could . . . while my travel timeline could have had me doing it over the summer for international travel in October, I didn't want to risk the govt. staffing situation to cause me other issues later.
Yeah, we have a slight crunch for my DW's passport. We're going on an international trip this summer/fall, and another in late spring of 2026. While her passport is valid through the 2nd trip, it's only valid for a couple of weeks afterward. No good.

She wants to renew now, to make sure we have it for both trips. But we actually have more time between the 2 trips (6-7 months) than we do between now and the first trip (5 months). I've been assuring her that the 6-7 months will be OK. I hope I'm right.

Keep in mind that when you apply for renewal, you need to submit your existing passport with the application. So, for however long it takes to to get your new passport, you will not be able to do any travel that requires a passport.

Not if you are doing your renewal online. They do advise, however, once you file for the renewal your current passport is no longer valid for international travel. I'm not sure what the process is if you are mailing in your renewal application or going to an office somewhere.

DH & submitted our renewals on 3/11 online and received confirmation our new passports were mailed today USPS Priority. Very impressed with how easy and fast it was.
UPDATE/CORRECTION . . . only *MY* passport renewal application has been processed and the new one shipped (I received it yesterday). My hubby still hasn't received confirmation of it being approved . . . only that it's been received. They were submitted at the same time (literally) from different computers, so we're not sure why the hold up on his . . . but it's not important (yet) as he doesn't have any international travel scheduled for the coming 12-18 months. If he doesn't get something confirming it's been approved in the coming weeks, he'll have to follow-up on it.

Just to add a data point, my wife and I submitted our renewal requests online exactly a week ago. Today I got notification that mine is approved and is being mailed. Hers still shows as being processed.

Final update, my wife''s passport was approved and arrived today, six days after mine did, about two weeks after we initiated the online renewal process.

Was notified my passport and passport card was going to expire within a year
Notified by email from the Passport people
Applied Online on Sunday August 24 for Passport and Passport Card
Received Notice today that my passport and passport card will be delivered around September 9
I did this renewal as a standard renewal and did not request expedited service
Picture was taken at CVS and paid around $20 which included a digital copy for upload with renewal
What a deal

We didn't have to send in our old ones.

The saga continues. Never received the email or letter from Passport Services within the week from 5/14 so called 8am Friday as the initial email stating more information was needed indicated. Essentially I learned that the Minneapolis office was processing my application and the rep said she would contact them to resend the "letter" that will tell me what I must do next. Nothing arrived via email that day and with the holiday weekend I don't anticipate a postal service letter until later this week if then. Grrr!

A further "grrr! emerged from me this morning when DH read the email he just opened from Passport Services. His new one will arrive tomorrow.

My husband, Frank renewed his passport during the government’s shut down. It was processed and delivered in two weeks. Apparently the online renewal was operating normally. The reason for renewing early is a passport that is about to expire in 6 months should be renewed before you can go on a cruise. We are going on a cruise in October so he renewed it in April.

Success!! We got home from our most recent European River Cruise that touched on Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. Our next scheduled trip in November won't allow 6 months before expiring, so it's time. We took our photos and filled out the application and sent them off online last Sunday, July 12. By Monday we got confirmation that they were accepted, and by Thursday, we both got emails that our new passports had shipped priority (we only checked 'Standard Delivery' (4-6 weeks)

Our new passports were delivered today, 7-18-26. On the sixth day since applying! Paula reminded me that we have an Alaska Companion Fare to use, so maybe there will be time for another quick escape.

@Passepartout
Did you get the standard US passport?
DH and I christened our new ones walking across the Rainbow Bridge into Canada earlier this month.
Canada almost didn't let me in.....
I was surprised when I was asked if I had ever worked on a farm! Slowly the patient Canadian agent repeated his question.
"Do you have any weapons or firearms?"

Yes, standard, not expedited. 6 days. Only difference is the new one has a plastic-y stiff photo page. I suppose that it will be easier for the agents to quickly open the thousands they have to handle to that page. No hard plans for a 'shakedown' trip to try it, but maybe we'll hop one of the darn near hourly flights to visit the kiddos in Seattle-land and slip into Vancouver.

Interesting. My husband and I both did online renewal on Saturday, September 26. I did his immediately after mine. I received my new passport 4 days later on Wednesday, September 30. His is still "In Process".

My spouse and I have been trying to renew ours online, but it keeps rejecting our digital photos. What did y’all use to take the photos?

I had DH stand in the bathtub with overhead lighting so no shadows using his Iphone and cropped to meet the parameters. He tookl several of me on my android against a neutral wall and finally one met was accepted. His passport was processed without issue but mine was rejected due to the photo actually being unacceptable. Re-submitted with a print passport picture taken at a nearby UPS store.
Keep trying. It's very frustrating I know.

When I renewed mine, it would not accept the photos I took at CVS. My son used his iPhone and we tried a few different times in his house/white wall background. We were ready to give up, but finally went through. :sneaky:

We went to a post office for the photos. It's a bit of a cranky post office, but for $15, they give you a thumb drive w the photo. We got home, downloaded my pic from my little thumb drive, all fine. Then went to get DH's...corrupted file. He went back the next day and went through the whole thing again.

We submitted the online application and got the passports back very quickly, under three weeks. The only strange thing is that the photos printed out very, very light. So light that we look a little ghostly. I assume we'll be fine, but they do look odd.

We used my little iPhone SE 3 and we stood against our light yellowish beige painted wall.

We sent them on line with our applications and received both passports really quickly.
