So here I am in Vegas, and the past 3 days staying with friends. I have had to sleep on a tempurpedic bed and pillow for the first time and must say, they are flat out awful ... at least for me. I have never had back pain before, but for 3 days straight I have woke up at 7 AM and with a sore back. And to think these cost more than a traditional mattress, i personally would rather sleep on the floor or a door .. And that is precisely what I plan to do for my last night. 3 strikes and your out.

Btw, the dogs own the couch.

I second that, Siesta. We are in the D.R., on an all Tempurpedic king size.
We both wake up with sore backs most every a.m.
With a name like "siesta" you should have the best.

I've seen it go both ways. I have had people insist we should get one - they are the cat's pajamas; others who have had just the same experience as the OP. (One complaint is that one you are settled in, it is very hard to change positions.)

I think I'll take a pass.

Not Sorry We Switched To Tempurpedic.

After many years of sleeping comfortably on Simmons Beauty Rest, we switched to Tempurpedic several years ago.

Now we're sleeping even more comfortably.

We even got rid of the conventional mattress in our dinky non-traveling travel trailer, replacing the old mattress with a generic no-name Tempurpedic-style memory foam mattress that's just as comfortable as the brand-name Tempurpedic mattress.

For comfort, none of the timeshare mattresses we've slept on can hold a candle to Tempurpedic & generic memory foam.

Who'd a-thunk ?

I like my Tempurpedic as well. I've needed a firm mattress for years and mine fits the bill just fine. My brother just purchased one and I guess they make them with different firmness ratings now, (At least I don't remember that being an option when I bought mine.)
I did warn him that just because I loved mine didn't mean they were right for everyone however. It's a tough call. It can take days or even weeks before one is really sure how a mattress feels to them.

I tried one at the store when we were looking for a new mattress and thought it just felt weird.

Period Of Adjustment.

The Chief Of Staff said it would take us some time to become accustomed to sleeping on Tempurpedic.

She was right.

It took me about 15 minutes.

Well, I wasn't willing to spend all that money, go through the hassle of having it delivered, set up, and all to hope we'd get accustomed to it, especially when there were other mattresses that felt better. ;) Also dh didn't like it either.

Proof that everyone has different tastes...

We've been sleeping on our king-sized Tempurpedic since fall of 1999. If we're gone for longer than three days, my husband and I look at each other and say, "I miss our bed!". Every time. Even in St. John. :p

A bed/pillow is just such a personal choice. We have a locally made memory foam Tempur knock-off. We love it and miss it terribly when we travel. Some cruise-ship beds come close and of course genuine Tempur-pedic, but we'll take our own.

Last year, DW's dad had to go to assisted living. She bought him an adjustable Tempur-pedic. Head and foot elevate. Expensive. He hated it! Couldn't move himself to different positions. He couldn't swing his legs out of it and he couldn't lift his scrawny butt out of it. So it got exchanged first into a firm innerspring mattress, then as his condition (CHF) deteriorated to a nursing home and hospital bed.

Sorry for the rambling, but just illustrating that all beds- no matter how expensive or how well advertised, aren't perfect for everyone.

As a mattress/furniture store owner, these opinions are exactly what I hear from customers who have purchased Temperpedic and memory foam knock off mattresses out on the market. Its either hit or miss, they usually love or hate them. I personally don't like them, you tend to sleep warmer but I have many happy customers who absolutely swear by them. (especially those with back and body pains)

With a traditional innerspring mattress most people usually get accustomed to the mattress within a week if they don't like right away. People who've purchased the memory foam products usually tell me within a day or two that they love or unfortunately hate. As a retailer it makes it a little tougher sale, I'm a small guy who doesn't give sleep guarantees, what I do offer is better pricing. I basically tell the customer to make sure this is exactly what you want and if not I steer them towards the big box mattress store where they get the guarantee to return if they don't like. It's illegal to sell used mattresses in California which is why the goodwills and salvation army's no longer take them.

I've heard the stores who take returns usually put them out on their floors and
resell them as floor models

Sorry for the rambling, just my 2 cents

Andy

We just got a Temperpedic about a month ago. We both like it. Well, I like it, but not sure I like it for the $$$'s, but DH loves it. It has really helped eliminate his back pain. That's worth a lot.

Had to laugh when DS came over to visit and we said go check out the bed, but don't jump on it. He did - face planted. They just don't listen :)

We bought a Tempurpedic last summer, and really like it. I was concerned about it being too warm, but no problem for me. It did take a while to get used to, but my back has thanked me several times over.

I laughed when I read about the face plant -- ouch!

Having a friend in the furniture auction business we had a tendency to get some real high end mattresses over the years. They were fine for 5 or 6 years then the sides began to dip. Two years ago we finally bought a Tempur pedic adjustable. It's fun to play with but not very practical for two and pretty darn expensive for occasional adjustment use. We both like the bed, I was worried about heat retention (my husband says he substitutes me for a camp heater when we go camping!) but it hasn't been a problem. It does allow both of us to sleep in one spot a lot better which helps us get a good nights sleep. I don't think it's worth $4000 but, if it last 10 or more years it might be worth it. By the way, the warranty is not as good as they want you to think. Go ahead, ask someone who owns one!!!

Ian had a queen sized Tempurpedic when we married. I had a king size Stearns and Foster. I loved my bed, he loved his. Many nights, he would start the night with me and move to his old bed about 1 or 2 am.

Last year we bought a king size Tempurpedic. I wasn't excited, but I felt like I could more easily adapt than Ian.

I now love it. I find that I wake up in exactly the same position I fell asleep in. It makes making the bed a snap!

A question for those who like the tempurpedic; do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach? I sleep on my stomach and wonder if that has anything to do with it, because on the commercials I always see them show the ”benefits” with someone laying on their side

adore it. we had a very high quality mattress prior, just about equally as costly. I was in real pain every morning and tossed and turned.

Bought our temperperdic( it does require getting used to) but have not had any pain or discomfort since....except, well, when we travel and I have to sleep on something else!

Great customer service too. After 3 years, we had a problem with the cover that exposed the foam topper and it started to tear/ wear poorly as a result. I called, filled out a form, sent a picture and had a new mattress within 7 days, old one removed and new one delivered.

Just posted, but the warranty has been worth it for us....not quite at 10 years...only 9, so 1 more to go, but i have never regretted a penny spent!

Yes!!! I noticed this too. :)

They are different, but I do think we will like ours. We did not get the adjustable yet, but plan to in a year or two.

I am a side sleeper, DH ends up on his back - maybe that's why he likes it so much.

Someone commented earlier that it's not so easy to move around, but I think that's the point -- you don't need to because of the way your body is supported in the memory foam.

I built my own faux-Tempurpedic, and I love it. Generally speaking, if you sleep on your back or stomach and you experience back pain in the morning, your mattress isn't supportive enough. The flip side to that is is one has a very supportive mattress and they sleep on their side, it can result in hip and shoulder pain. I was experiencing lower back pain nearly every morning with our old Simmons Beautyrest. When we got the new mattress, the pain went away immediately. I'm sure a new firmer sprung mattress would have also helped, but the foam style mattress gave me a lot more options for customization.

Resurrecting an old thread about Tempurpedic Mattresses

It's been a while, so just wondering if anyone has any more recent experience with Tempurpedic?

I'm at the point where I think I'm probably going to spring for either the Elite Cloud or the firmer Supreme Cloud. Today I preferred the softer Elite, but will go back tomorrow and try both again, plus hit another store which may carry a few different models.

I've always wanted a Tempurpedic, but now my lower back and hip issues are telling me it's time to move beyond a mattress topper on an old firm bed to something that will actually allow me to get a good night's sleep.

We shopped and shopped. DW didn't like the pure foam mattress (Temp) or the clones; usually too hot and/or too much 'sink.'

We ended up with a hybrid: pocketed coils and foam over that. We spent a great deal of time in the store lying on the mattress. We even went to several different stores to make sure that all the (same model) mattresses felt the same. We were very very pleased.

After almost a year, we love ours. Very firm (over all motion) with a nice foam feel to the top of the mattress. Also, the new foams are not at all hot (like the old ones). Can't hardly tell the diff. between the hybrid and a regular mattress--except for better sleep, less shifting/rolling and much, much less movement when entering/exiting the bed.

I highly reccomend testing the hybrid. Ours does have the electronic full motion system--we got it for about $1000 upgrade from the regular base mattress system. (not split--but would be with split mattresses).

The foam on these products has really really improved.

Brewster Green (two weeks).
Bought recently...

I have back problems. Hubby has leg and foot problems. We were convinced by a very good salesperson at Relax the Back store that we needed the Tempurpedic split king adjustable mattresses about a month ago. There are different levels of firmness as well as a "cool" model now. We were also told that it would take time to adjust (up to six weeks) and that I might feel increased back pain for a short while before feeling less. Go figure.

The goal is for you to sleep on your back. We bought the firmest and are having a had a hard time adjusting though I can not say that I am hurting worse. Perhaps even a little less or no change. Hubby is snoring less with his head adjusted up.

I'm concerned about the side sloping downwards. It already feels as if my mattress is slightly sloping to the outside. I do not sit on the side and sleep in the middle but do sometime roll to the outside on my side during the night and then back to my back. If it is doing that after a month, what will it do in the future? However, I have to say I can not see it actually sloping. It just feels that way to me when I get in and I've been moving far to the other side to try to smash down the other side!!!

We have two more months to return or exchange the mattress. Not sure what we will end up doing. Hubby says he thinks he is sleeping better.
