[2011] considering the cancellation option [Starwood]

This is my first blog entry .... anywhere, anytime. Lots of great, helpful and insightful conversation on this site.

My wife & I went through the sales presentation and while I am a fairly conservative individual, I saw a perceived value in the opportunity presented to us. With that (and more thought) I'm considering exercising the cancellation option as the total purchase still may be a bit more than where we should be. Has anyone gone through that process or seen any fees assessed in association with cancellation?

The program is Starwood Vacation Ownership

It is very likely that your best choice is to rescind (cancel), if you are still within the cancellation period. You have not posted any details (exactly what you bought and for how much), but it is almost a sure thing that it can be purchased resale for much, much less.

It is also likely that you would benefit from several months of doing research to determine what timeshare (or system) would be best for you to buy, before you pull the trigger.

Cancel and buy resale. In your contract you will find the procedure for canceling. Send any letters certified so you have a receipt of when it was received

Yes recind by following the instructions provided in the package, exactly as written. Make sure you get it sent in before the end of the recision period.
 
Rescind immediately and take a more deliberate approach. Do your research here and you'll likely find that what you purchased is available for much, much less via resale. And if you decide to buy from the developer, the same deal will be there in 6 months (or longer).
 
No fees associated with cancellation (if done within recession period) except postage fees!;)
 
There are no fees - you have a legal right to rescind.

You should ABSOLUTELY CANCEL! You can buy the same thing on the rental market for a fraction of the cost.

There Is No Deal Purchased At Developer Pricing That Even Remotely Makes Sense, Unless You Are Retroing A Resale, Even Then It's Suspect At Best.

Get Outttttttttt, While You Can!!!!!!!!


What Did You Buy?
Resort?
Staroptions?
Maintenance Fee?
Unit Size, Deeded?
Etc....
 
OK. I appreciate the quick responses as we still have time to act toward canceling. I really like the timeshare idea but your comments make sense. If only I had my iPAD during our 'think about it' time. I would have found TUG sooner and avoided some of this.

What a great forum....and Thank You. You provided insight that only time and experience can provide, neither of which we had.

1) Cancel
2) Spend $15 and join TUG
3) Read, read and read all the info available here
4) Purchase a resale at the place that fits your travel needs

where and what did you buy? How much? etc???
 
I rescinded my first purchase (and only developer purchase). I followed the instructions; it was easy. I received a full refund on my AmEx card within a week or two.

Starwood never even asked me to return the promotional materials I was given (looseleaf binder with info on all resorts, etc.) which were very helpful when I started buying many of those same units resale.

The developer price on that Princeville eoy unit was about $33,000; one can buy it on eBay for <$2,000 today.

CANCEL!!!

I just cancelled my contract too! Except with Wyndam Grand Desert. Thank goodness we had a day. Since I was out of state and I could not over night it I hired a courier service to courier our signed letter. The courier was so great they stayed there and waited for them to sign on their letterhead that they relieved my cancellation.

Money:
$29.00 courier service
$14.00 thank you card and cookies to courier service for going above and beyond.

Saving 18,000.

I will buy resale!
 
Just so you know for future reference - the rescission only had to be postmarked by the deadline - not reach them by the deadline.

I found TUG in time and cancelled.. my only expense was about a $500 loss in currency exchange when the deposit went back on my CDN $ credit card.

I'm going to assume you bought a unit worth 86,000 StarOptions for $16,000. If this is the case, then you paid too much. For $16-20,000 you can buy 148,100 StarOptions on the resale market for Westin Kierland 2 bdrm platinum.

hi i bought 86000 pts $16000 . last week 13th at wyndam vip 2 years 300000 pts first year only 2 free weeks thrown in i know i made a mistake
im past cancel date i saw things on ebay for $1.00 what do you think
