When I was in high school and teachers’ college, I worked part-time in a hair salon. Most of the girls were from Glasgow, and half the time I couldn’t understand what they were saying! 😅😅😅 They were so much fun to work with!

Since so many Europeans speak decent & even great English, and I do French passably enough to not totally anger the French, the only time I was ever completely unable to speak to the locals in all my trips to Western Europe was trying to speak English in Glasgow. We would stare at each other, both wondering "How do I get out of this?" I was only there for a day, but I think I never really understood anyone except by writing

One not mentioned is "shag" which here in the south is a type of dance one does to beach music, but to the Brits, and well in much of the Commonwealth means sexual intercourse. We had a former North Carolina govenor who was on a job recruiting trip to one of the Canadian provinces and during an event with the provincial premier where there was a dance floor, a beach music song was played and the NC governor and his wife got up and danced the shag. When they got back to the table, the govenor asked the premier "would you like to shag with my wife?". The premier turned beet red, taking a very different meaning than that intended by the governor.
