1500 points will get me to Presidential level

I'm thinking about buying a few DC points in order to get to the Presidential level.

Right now, we own 5500 trust points that run from Feb 1 to Feb 1. We also own an enrolled platinum Shadow Ridge week that was part of a hybrid deal. The points from that week run from January 1 to January 1.

I read somewhere that if I buy aftermarket points, Marriott will open a new account for us unless the points we are buying match the date of the points we already own. We're really interested in the Presidential level as much as the points.

How can I make sure the process goes the way we hope?

First, I think MVC will change your existing DC points use year to calendar year due to the bundle purchase. You may want to buy your new points with the same calendar year use. It would be much easier to track banking and borrowing deadlines; however, some experience owners may prefer some flexibility. I don’t believe you will get a new account. You may want to ask MVC. Others may chime in. Cheers.

So when you bought the points as part of the Hybrid deal, they didn't line up the use year on those at January?

The first batch of points I bought had a start date of 1 Feb, so they made the other points that way too.

Looking at Redweek, it seems like most of the posted points for sale have January start dates, though I'm a bit suspicious of that.

I got the name of a customer advocate from my salesperson. I think I'm going to call her and see if we can get the points all lined up to January 1, and at the same time ask whether they would be able to do the same for a third-party points purchase.

Keep in mind, the Use Year of your points is on the deed, so unless MVC has a way and is willing to simply treat your existing points on a calendar Use Year for “ease of use” purposes without updating the deeds, somebody (meaning you) would likely have to pay to have an updated deed prepared and filed for each of your existing batches as well as your proposed new to be purchased batch.

As far as 2 realtors who deal with points, and, MVCI themselves told me, the use year must be the same for your purchased points else they open a new account, your points do not combine, etc.So, you would need to find a Feb 1 use year resale points.

We bought a hybrid package from Marriott six years ago (enrolled week plus trust points) and purchased resale trust points this year via eBay that have a different use date than the trust points in our hybrid package. There were no issues combining them into our MVC account.

That seems logical as they can track Use Year differences in one account when you receive points transferred into your account with a different Use Year.

I know that if you are an enrolled legacy week owner and buy trust points, they align the use year of the trust points to January. So why would they do this differently when you buy trust points as part of a hybrid package? Also, if you are a trust point owner, why can't you choose to have new points you buy aligned to the same use year?

We own both points (bought in lots of 3500 and 2000) and we have 4 enrolled properties. The points show as April contracts and the enrolled properties are supposedly Jan usage. I called one time (web chat) and asked the rep when my use year started and if the usage was different for the points and the enrolled properties. She said my usage ran Jan 1st to Jan 1st and that it was the same for the points and the enrolled weeks even though my points show on my account as April contracts. MVC did not open a new account for the points acquistion (one of the properties was acquired in 'bundle' deal) and my status shows as Chairman's level which is correct if you add up all my enrolled weeks and the points--just over 15,000.

Yes, 6 years ago, not today though. It changed. I am speaking only of non Marriott purchases of points to combine with existing points, not weeks. Call MVCI and reach the department that handles enrolling resale points. They will confirm. Insist no matter what an agent tells you. Just trying to save you trouble...

We bought our hybrid package two years ago. I'd rather not have an unexpected surprise when enrolling, though.

Our sales rep suggested I talk to a customer advocate by the name of Susan Wickell. Does that seem like a reasonable place to start?

Pretty sure you'll be ok when direct from Marriott.

What I'm trying to do is buy 1500 more aftermarket points to get to Presidential level.

I just spoke to Susan Wickell, and she said they would change the points to January 1 to match up with the points I get from the week. They have to re-do the deed, so it may take a couple weeks. She told me that they were not able to change the deed for points purchased outside of Marriott, but that if I buy points with January start date, I should be good.

Most of the points listed on Redweek have the January date, but I think I'd be wise to ask the sellers to verify on their deeds.

BTW, my sales person said they have some hybrid deals available right now that could get me to Chairman level for just over $7 per point, but that's more than we care to spend right now.

If she can change the points to Jan 1, that will make it far easier! Most of the resale points are Jan 1. Good job!

And definitely check their dates! Though, 90%+ should be ok, don't want a nasty surprise.

What’s the cost of the 1,500 points?

Presidential allows an extra six months of life on the banked points - are there are key perks you’re looking for?

I’ve encouraged people to buy points to get to Executive, because I believe single day reservations are very valuable, but I don’t recall the benefits with the next level and hope they are worth the cost.

Best,

Greg

If you purchase points at $5 a point, you're looking at an all in cost around $12741 according to my estimator with an additional $830 in MF. Buying developer would be closer to $22000. I think in terms of benefits this is one of those grey areas where it really depends on the person.

Here are the main differences between Presidential and Executive.
  • 60 Day vs. 30 Days for last minute reservation discounts.
  • 1 extra month to elect points for enrolled weeks.
  • Platinum Premier vs. Platinum in Marriott Rewards
There are a few more items but for a majority of owners, the difference is not significant.

To us the biggest advantage of Presidential is 'lifetime' Marriott Platinum Premier and thus United Silver. Obviously, those perks are subject to cancellation and are meaningless if you already get them through other means.

I understand that there are some who take advantage of the last minute discounts and we almost used the 60 day window once. But after reading reviews we discovered that South Beach wasn't really ready for guests when it first opened and booked elsewhere.

Our favorite use of the 60 day discount is extending weeks by 5 days, the non weekend days. We extend in advance and use the Puck trick at 60 days. This gives us 12 day vacations instead of 7 which is to our liking, cheaply.

Agree with United Silver, nice benefit.

How do you get a points contract at $5 per point these days? My average cost per point is a little over $5 but I am not sure I could get that anymore.

Resale, or less. Stevens calculator is for resale points.

The cheapest sale of pointe I see on Redweek right now is $2.33 so by the time you add on the $3.00 Marriott junk fees you’re over $5.00.

I believe Steven was using $5 per point plus the junk fees in his example.

I suspect MVC would ROFR at $2.33. That is very cheap.
