    Two officers killed Oahu

Very sad news. I was just in the area on the H-1 and many police cars headed to scene. It was a beautiful morning that has turned into a horrible tragedy. Prayers for our first responders. Ongoing incident and fire.

Coast Guard Searching for Helicopter Tour off Kauai Coast

NTSB prelim report out. Pilot returning from 8th flight of day. Maybe he wanted or needed a direct route home?

Coast Guard Searching for Helicopter Tour off Kauai Coast

Many are familiar with the Cessna Caravan crashing in the sea off Molokai through the vivid videos on YouTube. The pilot did a terrific job. Unfortunately, one life was lost largely as a result of the one passenger having the wrong life jacket (one for a child). She did not appear to be in...

Coast Guard Searching for Helicopter Tour off Kauai Coast

One of the news reports shows where he flew into the top of a ridge. I think that ridge was 2700 feet. There was a hiker in the area that heard hovering. Lost and hovering or just heading home? Either way he needed to be a few hundred feet higher. And he should not be flying into clouds...

Coast Guard Searching for Helicopter Tour off Kauai Coast

I went up in a Bell Ranger by Hoover Dam with my son when he was six years old. It was advertised by a billboard that said $29 helicopter ride. I think we paid $40 each because we didn’t want to wait for other passengers. The ride was about 5-10 minutes down to the lake in blue sky. My son...

Coast Guard Searching for Helicopter Tour off Kauai Coast

5,148-foot-tall Mount Waialeale receives more than 400 inches of rain annually. I don’t care if it is sunny in Lihue. And I don’t care if only one VFR pilot is necessary because he can follow the terrain. I ain’t going. Period.

Coast Guard Searching for Helicopter Tour off Kauai Coast

I quick look at a map of the Island shows that remaining over the ocean could add a significant distance to return to the heliport. Which leads me to question how much range is left on the helicopters at the end of the tours. Is circling the Island to the south even a viable option if the...

Coast Guard Searching for Helicopter Tour off Kauai Coast

Obviously this pilot lost contact with the terrain. It is reasonable to conclude that he did not intentionally get himself into that situation. Tour helicopters in Hawaii should be required to have GPS terrain avoidance like the one that I linked to. They should also be required to have a...

Coast Guard Searching for Helicopter Tour off Kauai Coast

I don’t know what technology is in that helicopter or most helicopters... but it seems to me a simple screen with gps navigation would tell you that there is a mountain in front of you https://explore.garmin.com/en-US/txi/#helicopters

Coast Guard Searching for Helicopter Tour off Kauai Coast

A local hiker in the area reported the sound of hovering, then impact. I am not a helicopter pilot, but I suspect disorientation combined with a lack of lift due to weather conditions. The bird was fully loaded. Low probability of accident is found in commercial airliners. Too many people...

Coast Guard Searching for Helicopter Tour off Kauai Coast

News report out today says pilot not instrument rated. I am afraid that the NTSB will have one sentence that sums up the cause of the crash. This will not be the first time this has happened. Standards will need to be changed for tourist flights. I will not go up in one of these.

    Daily Commute Home

The price on oxtail in meat dept’s is really high. So not really worth making it yourself. The other Oahu favorites are eating at a “Pho” place. Or getting a Korean plate lunch. If you like cooking fresh fish, look for the Ahi or Aku bone. If the Ahi bone comes off a large fish, it is tasty...

    Daily Commute Home

I stopped going to those supercut places years ago. Lots of small shops for men’s haircuts on Oahu. They tend to be less expensive and do a better job. Haircut and tip combined equals the other places.

CNN does not know much about the Hawaiian Islands

I agree with this. The discussion shouldn’t go beyond travel reporting. The OP’s title seemed to drag this to politics because of the media outlet discussed. We all have our political opinions. But, I have zero interest in reading about other’s political beliefs here in this forum.

CNN does not know much about the Hawaiian Islands

Journalist is nothing but a self-appointed label. Anyone can call themselves a journalist. And being backed by large corporate organization or have a diploma from a “top” school, does not enhance credibility in my opinion. Credibility comes from consistent accuracy and hard work. I find much...

I Got the Job and We’re Moving to Oahu

Are you considering renting a small place on Oahu and flying home to Molokai on the weekends? You should be able to make a lot of friends on Molokai if you are willing to do some shopping at Costco and bring stuff home with you on the weekends. Of course, weight is a big factor flying these days.

I Got the Job and We’re Moving to Oahu

I hear of urban dwellers that make use of Uber and wiki bikes. I understand Uber pricing can fluctuate quite a bit. One warning, be careful as a driver, bicyclist, and pedestrian in town, we seem to get a lot of tragedies. MKO is a great staycation if you are patient and know how to get it...

    Twin engine King Air crash

There may be no way of finding out if the jumpers were strapped in. Perhaps there will be clues. 2000 lbs of payload not tied down may have rendered the control inputs useless. I would not be quick to blame the pilot. I appreciate that people have dedicated their lives to this kind of...

    Twin engine King Air crash

Apparently the standards are different if they were using a King Air on a tourist flight instead of for skydiving. Maybe a commercial pilot could chime in here. The other thing I noticed was this shop was offering $20 fun jump specials on Saturdays if all 13 slots are filled. I guess that...

    Twin engine King Air crash

My memory could be off on Reno. Google isn’t helping here. I got my pilot’s license back in those days. It’s been many many years since I have flown a plane. But the internet has certainly helped me learn a lot in recent years.
