Another vote for Shearwater. My biggest objection to Bali Hai is that the buildings are too close to each other, which is not true at Shearwater. However, the units at Bali Hai are very nice.

The units at Shearwater were updated completely, including furniture, draperies, bedding, kitchen cabinets, granite countertops, appliances, new washer/dryer, updated bathrooms and all new carpet/tile and wood-look laminate floors. They are extremely nice. I was so impressed when we stayed a few years ago because the remodel was done well. The cabinets have some issues now, with people slamming them and also moisture from the kitchen sink, but otherwise, it's a beautiful stay. My mother-in-law is 90, and she wants to stay at least one more time before she cannot go anymore. It was the first place she stayed with us on Kauai in 2006, and to her, Shearwater IS Hawaii. We own at Hono Koa on Maui, where our lanai is 35 feet from the ocean, and she prefers Shearwater. I love Hono Koa.

I was at Bali Hai in May, and I was disappointed. The decor of the living room was drab; amazing that they couldn't use upholstery with brilliant Hawaiian colors! The staff was not as friendly and helpful as at Shearwater and Ka E'o Kai. For me, Shearwater is always my first choice.

Jun 2017 RCI exchange to Shearwater we were in the least desirable unit on property. No view (except garbage collection area) and no breeze reach the recessed area behind the pool.
