Hi Dariah,
Welcome to TUG. I’m somewhat of a newbie but I’ll try to give you some guidance.

What time of year do you like to travel?
If you would like to go to the same place every year at the same time, a fixed week timeshare might work for you. Some people choose their home resort close to home, in case they are unable to fly that year or they can’t do a long road trip.
If you would like the flexibility of going at different times of the year you could purchase a Points based or floating timeshare. This type of timeshare is best used when planned usually a year or more in advance.

You say you would like a 4* Resort. That would include Vistana (Westin & Sheraton), Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott. If you are purchasing a 4* Hotel branded timeshare, your maintenance fees will be higher than $1,000.

You stated that you would like to exchange your timeshare and trade for another. There are a few exchange companies, but the biggest are RCI and Interval International. Interval seems to have better resorts, but RCI has more resorts available. It all depends what other timeshare owners deposit into the exchange company. To check out what resorts are offered from RCI and Interval:

Whatever you do, take your time and don’t rush into purchasing a timeshare. DON’T buy retail (from the developer). Explore your way around tugbbs.com and tug2.com. Ask questions on the forum. Check out the hotel branded timeshare websites and their locations. Look at eBay to see the range of prices and quality of the timeshares. (P.S. I purchased 2 oceanfront timeshares on eBay for $1.00). Check out TUG resort reviews to see what other tuggers are saying about the resorts.

Hopefully others will come along and give you some suggestions.
