1) Is there a vacation destination you wish to visit most of the time or on a regular basis? if so where?
- Ideally, Kauai in Hawaii. Preferably the south side, Poipu/Koloa.

2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time?
Half home resort / Half trade. Have little ones aged 2 and 4 so some years it might be good to not have to deal with them on a long flight to Hawaii. :)

3) What are your 5 top trade destinations?
Other Hawaiian islands. Florida. Carolinas. Colorado.

4) How many people do you usually travel with?
2 adults, 2 kids. Sometimes will bring the nanny until the kids are older

5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule?
School schedule. Not opposed to pulling the kids out of school for a week though. I remember doing that growing up to avoid busy vacations.

6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance?
Yes.

7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time?
Yes.

8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars?
3-5

9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing?
$5-7k

10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year?
Ideally around $2k. Willing to go up to $3. But obviously, prefer less.

11) Are you a detail oriented planner?
Yes, I'd like to think so.

12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do?
Yes

TIA for looking at this/replying! Just some food for thought. We absolutely love Kauai. Preferably stay on the southside but not opposed to any other part of the island as long as there is a nice pool or beach. Same can be said for other islands. I love the idea of MVCI but I spoke to a sale's person and was completely shocked with the cost. I love the flexibility it offers but not sure it's worth the price. Thanks!

Have you looked at buying a resale week at the Marriott in Poipu?

The upfront price would be no where near what Marriott would sell you the points for, but then you would need to use II for any trades out of Your home resort. A Hawaii week will have great trade potential but higher annual fees.

The Marriott in Poipu (Waiohai) is a great resort. We love it there. Purchase price is in your range and MF's are currently $2077.
It trades well to any Marriott. I personally wouldn't recommend any of the other timeshares in the Poipu area, with the possible exception of Luwai. Luwai is NOT air-conditioned though and I wouldn't recommend it for summer. It's also more like 2-4 * (3'ish) depending on building etc...

That being said....

You could probably buy another Marriott (Orlando) and trade into Hawaii for less MF's. This would not be as easy....especially during peak summer weeks (kids). Also, you'd be trading and it wouldn't be at 12 months out.....

Most will remind you that MF's do go up every year and that you should only buy in Hawaii to use; not to trade. Once again though, you can definitely trade Waiohai for Maui or Ko'Olina very easily. Ask me how I know....I've done it for the last 3 years. Marriott preference is a great thing.

There are indeed resale ads for Marriott Waiohai on TUG and Redweek etc.... Confession: I may have such an ad on TUG (this is not an advertisement, just don't want you to think my recommendation is influenced....)

Cheers.
