1) Is there a vacation destination you wish to visit most of the time or on a regular basis? if so where?

We would love to go to Florida or somewhere else warm every winter, just to get out of the dreary winter in DC.

2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time?

Maybe? We tend to go on several vacations a year (three big ones and a few smaller 3- to 4-day trips). So we might like visiting the same place every year, in addition to our other more varied trips.

3) What are your 5 top trade destinations?

Domestic: We prefer the eastern half of the U.S., because we have four kids and therefore prefer driving to flying everyone. Other than that, we're super flexible and like to find new places to love. We love New England, Florida, mountains, coast. Went to Milwaukee last summer and really enjoyed that.

Foreign: Europe, Caribbean, Central America (specific locations flexible)

4) How many people do you usually travel with?

Six: Two adults and four kids (currently ages 10, 7, 5, 3)

5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule?

We homeschool and my husband has a fairly flexible job (and can sometimes work remotely), so we can travel pretty much any time. (We consider this our #1 homeschool perk!)

6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance?

We tend to have one or two firmly booked trips per year, peppered with lots of last-minute ones. So yes.

7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time?

Yes. More than once a year, even. (This year we're doing four full weeks.)

8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars?

Probably 4

9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing?

For us, it's not so much about what we can afford. We'd just prefer to buy in at a fairly low number to make the timeshare worth it. We don't want to be catching up to our initial purchase price for ten years before the timeshare makes financial sense.

10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year?

To make a timeshare a better deal than renting the same type of room directly every year, we'd like to keep maintenance fees around/under $1500.

11) Are you a detail oriented planner?

Yes.

12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do?

Yes.

*We're considering a timeshare as just ONE part of our larger travel plan. We only expect to use it for one week-long vacation per year. We'll continue to do our other trips with cash/credit card rewards like we do now.

I saw this, and since I suggested you do it thought I better chime in.

Your family seems like a potentially good fit for the Wyndham system. They have probably the best variety of resort locations on the East Coast. They probably vary from 3-4 stars, although I suspect you'd find them fine on average.

Their system is a bit complicated, but is also pretty flexible. I think you probably wouldn't have a hard time finding something that met your needs for a 2 bedroom in Florida for a week in winter plus a 3-4 shorter notice vacation somewhere else on the east coast, especially if you are flexible on dates.

You might also consider a fixed week at an independent resort. There are lots of nice coastal resorts in Florida, or a summer week in New England might be a good fit. I would only do that if you thought you'd be happy going the same place every year, and you should probably try the resort before buying in that case.

My suggestion would look at the Hgvc system and buy an affiliate property in Florida that also can trade in II.

This way you have a highly desirable location that you have the option to use each year, or you can enroll it in hgvc and use your points for other hgvc properties, or trade thru hgvc with rci or directly trade with II.

I agree with Bizaro86 that the Wyndham system is worth a closer look. RESALE, OF COURSE. There are lots of bundles of their points available for pennies on the dollar. They are flexible, exchange with and give access to RCI without paying for another membership. Yes, there IS a learning curve, and the resorts- while plentiful in the Eastern US are not truly uniform. Some are better than others.

RENT a few times to get a feel for how it would work for you and yours.

We do timeshares as part of our vacationing 'life'. Cruises, a second home, package tours, invitations to join friends at their places round out the schedule. People ask, "Don't you EVER stay home?"

Thanks. It didn't happen right away. We are in our 70's and planned early on for our later years. It took many decades- not just years- of living beneath our means, and carefully saving and investing.

Do your kids like Disney? Would you go there every year or two? Maybe Disney Vacation Club points.
