Ocean side, guests were complaining. Staff were digging holes to bury it and filling plastic bags with seaweed but it did not make a dent. There was some at Lagunamar in August too but nowhere nears what they had and still very swimmable.. We were wondering if it is related to red tide in Florida . You should check if at other times of year the situation is better.
I checked the reviews on Tripadvisor, it seems that this is a recurring issue in Cancun every 3-4 years, a couple of months at a time, typically in the summer. From what i read it seems to be going away so hopefully in a month from now it will be completely gone. Lagunamar is a good alternative regardless because the pools are so great.

We were in Rivera Maya during November 2015 and seaweed was an issue. My cousin was There in July 2014 and they were burying it every day and couldn’t keep up. It’s a common issue for the area.

Usually at Lagunamar they rake it up with a tractor every morning if there is a lot of seaweed. We spoke with somebody staying at Riviera Maya 2 years ago in April and they complained about it. They said the seaweed was 3 feet deep on the beach and they could not walk through it to get to the ocean. they came to Cancun every day via the bus to get away from the seaweed and use the public beaches.

Seaweed is a problem in all of the Caribbean, not just limited to Mexico or the Riviera Maya. We were in Barbados in May and there was a huge seaweed problem. No amount of cleanup could possibly keep up with the problem.

We just got back from Lagunamar. There isn't too much seaweed on the shore, and they were cleaning it up almost every day. But the seaweed in the water goes out pretty far and we saw very few people in the water. It seemed to build up even more over the 10 days we were there.

I hadn't heard about swimming in the lagoon at the other Westin property - what about the crocodiles? Aren't they down there also?
