Sorry guys this LaVar Ball only played semi professional football and was on a practice squad for a NFL team.
DeniseM, you are correct in your opinion, this guy is only a wanna-be and he better pray that his NBA rookie son survive his first year of the NBA League.

Brian - Lavar Ball is not a former NBA player - he's just a wanna-be, living vicariously through his sons:

And a world class loud mouth jerk:rolleyes:

By the way, Louis Vitton sunglasses retail for $500 and up so it wasn’t like a $20 pair from Walmart. In some states, a $500 theft is a 1st degree felony with possible prison and/or fine.

Cheers

In California they would have been charged with burglary.

I like how LaVar Ball is downplaying the [government's] involvement in this matter, and how the entire incident is nothing much of anything. But behind closed doors I guarantee you he was in a rage about his son's behavior. He was thinking his son would be 1-n-done at UCLA and go pro. Well, I'd say he's done.

Yes and in Saudi Arabia, they may have cut his hand off.

As others have said, its not the shoplifting or stealing. Its respect for host countries customs and laws. Not sure why his father is downplaying it, even in the context of "he has seen much worse from the 'hood (presumably)". Again its not the actual crime. And yes murder and other physical violence is much worse. For murder in China, you would be executed, and it wouldn't take 20-30 years on death row either.

Feel sorry for his kids to have a father like that. Kind of wonder if the father downplaying it because maybe his son does this all the time. Shoplifting in the US is kind of a joke to some; some consider it a redistribution of wealth; or just for fun because one can.

Hmm, I wouldn't be so sure the boys' playing careers are over. If they are talented they will probably find another team or be allowed to play at UCLA, maybe even next semester.
People have short attention spans and memories in the US. As long as the the father keeps quiet and lets it die down.

An “ugly American” is one of those student athlete basketball parent. Now he is calling the President of the United States out who helped his son and the other two (2) athletes to be free.
Happy Thanksgiving to those Three UCLA Students Athletes.

They say the apple does not fall far from the tree.
Were they taught anything about boundaries & consequences as kids?
Maybe they've learned something from this experience, even if their parents haven't.

I was wondering this very thing. Heaven help you if you mention climate change or some pundit's comment from Faux News.

Well I don't know about political or what not for TUG, but its just a wakeup call for kids and youth (and maybe some adults) to be mindful of the local laws and customs when traveling -- what may be acceptable and funny at home is not so much in other places.

"This thread is WAY TOO POLITICAL for TUG."

I don't see this thread as political or contentious.
We pretty much agree that their behavior was sophomoric & criminal.
It's just a question what we feel is the appropriate punishment.
IOW, our social mores ... and not much more.

Where is stealing high valued luxury items considered acceptable or funny?

What’s political about discussing a trio of thieves?
