I caught an episode of Pioneer Woman this morning - yeah, I was bored.
In it, Lee Drummond made a roast turkey brined in maple syrup & whiskey.

I'd never considered brining a turkey before. I printed out her recipe.
... 3 cups of whiskey and 3 cups of syrup... Sounds good to me.

Anyone have thoughts/experience on maple-whiskey brined turkey?

.

I think it sounds good. I'd try it.

I haven't had any luck brining with Bourbon so let us know how whiskey works out. The Bourbon brine is a smoker recipe and sounds similar to your idea.

Anymore, I like to bone the turkey. Then I brine it in apple juice. Then I wrap the meat, stuffing and cranberries in its skin and roast it in an elevated roasting rack. Boning a turkey doesn't take too long, imo.

This year I will make a torfuky in addition to the boned turkey.

Using 3 cups of maple syrup = $$

Better be well worth the cash. Sounds way too sweet for my tastes.

Simple brine for us, and into the smoker she'll go. Just like the past many other years.

I actually just stick the turkey in an oven bag- no brining- brush with oil and season-it bastes itself- cooks fast-and comes out tender and delicious. And limited cleanup. Easy Peasy. That's my method and I'm sticking to it.

I bought some Turkey oven bags and I have yet to use them. My friends regularly use the oven bags for cooking turkeys and they are delicious.

The bird is in the brining bag (a jumbo ziplock), in the fridge.
I cut the "Pioneer Woman" recipie by 1/3...
2 cups of maple syrup (a gift jar, no cost)
2 cups of whiskey
3/4 cup of sea salt
4 minced garlic cloves
2 TB of peppercorns
3 bay leaves
2 rosemary sprigs
peels from 1 orange and 1 apple.

It tastes good with my finger-test. We shall see.
