I am helping my Bros. family plan a trip to the Big Island:

Are there any timeshare in the Kona area that sleep 8? If not, where?

Are there any resorts on the BI with 3 bedrooms?

Is there any great snorkeling near Waikoloa?

Denise,
The Kona Coast Resorts have 3-BR units that sleep 8. Perhaps others who have favorite snorkeling sites can tell you which beaches are the closest. Nice of you to help your brother plan his trip! CJ

Beach 69 is a pretty decent place to snorkel or dive. The other name is like Waialeia Beach. There are shade scruby trees and sand.

You might need to do vrbo for a place for 8.

Good Luck

The Kona Coast Resort sounds perfect - that's a Shell resort, right?

*Oops - looks like the 3 bedrooms only sleep 6.

Keahou Surf & Racquet has three bedroom units, not sure if those are just their rental units or timeshare as well.

Also, don't know about the snorkling but both Hapuna Beach and the beach at the Mauna Kea, are beautiful, and just a bit north of Waikoloa.

Kingsland Hilton in Waikola has 3 Bedroom timeshares that sleep 8.
There is a secluded cove past the very end of Hapuna beach in front of the grassy area of the
Westin Hapuna Beach Resort that is perfect for snorkeling.

I think the 3-BR sleeps 6 privately, but that the maximum capacity is 8? Record's rec for Kingsland Hilton would be great too!

Edit: cked. w/Kona Resorts. There are only three 3-br. units at the resort! It's really difficult to exchange into these, as the 3 owners usually use the units themselves and don't deposit them into I.I.. Sorry...

If your brother likes snorkeling, a night snorkel to view the manta rays is a must. I am not sure if there is an accessible beach because boat tours take you to the area off the Kona runway where the Mantas arrive just after sunset. They are attracted to the lights on the rafts. Incredible. Would do again.

Denise, the Kona Coast 3 BR is listed in ii as sleeps 6 private, 8 total. While there are some 3 BR listed as 8/8, it is more common to see 6/8 listed for sleeping capacity (private/total). Do you need 8 private or 8 total?

If you are with ii, you can do an advanced search and plug in the criteria of 3 BR unit for Hawaiian islands. That will limit your search to about 13 matches, some of which have limited exchange activity.

Some of the Hawaiian TS may have 3 BR (and there's even one with a 4 br - - The Cliffs) but some may "show" a 3 BR but there are only a few on property. Example: Point at Poipu. I believe that there are now 2 - three BR units there now that the sales guys closed that office.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info! My Bros. family want to go during high season, so they will have to rent - I know an exchange is not feasible. I am just doing a little research to see what BI resorts sleep 8 (total, not private.)

Denise, I'm sure you are familiar with vrbo and how they work. You can narrow your search by how many people and how many bedrooms you're looking for. Are you limiting the search to timeshare resorts where they can rent.

They would prefer the amenities of a resort - not a condo or home, so I'm checking out timeshares for them. Their primary activity is snorkeling.

I have found rentals at resorts that have both timeshare, and full ownerships, through vrbo. Our home resort of Maui Hill is one and the Keahou Surf & Racquet is another.

You could always ask on the HGVC page if anyone owns a 3 BR they’d be willing to book and rent. You can also book kings Land on Hilton dot com.

I think Kings Land is out of their budget, and they want to be in/near Kona to be closer to snorkeling at 2 Step. Also, on TUG, you can't solicit rentals in the discussion forums. I'm just collecting info for them - I won't be making their reservation.

Many vrbo units share inventory with a resort. Since these vrbo units are privately owned the occupancy is sometimes negotiable.

There are rentals on Homeaway at Mauna Lani Bay with excellent snorkeling right off the beach. 3br 3ba sleeps 8 is not bad when split between 3 couples.

2 step is good snorkeling but the location is not the greatest, very few beaches in Kona and to the south. I prefer the beaches and snorkeling to the north.

Mauna Lani Bay looks fantastic, and someone else recommended it too, but I can't find any units that sleep 8 on HomeAway. I have searched for various dates, including off-season dates, and not coming up with anything?

There is also night snorkeing with the Mantas with Sea Quest out up Keauhou Bay. They also do day trips to Two Step and Captain Cook.

This one in the villages looked nice.

Thanks - I don't know why nothing is coming up for me - must be operator error.

Do all of these properties have access to the resort amenities?

I think that resort is up by Waikaloa area. Just be careful if you are on the TA forums and say the word "2-step". You'll get chastised for stealing from the Hawaiian people and their culture.

Personally I think the snorkeling areas down by Kona are great, but the lack of beaches, not so much.
But if you like to just stay at a resort, then the Waikaloa area is pretty nice (HGVC has many there, but not sure how many are 3 BR).
Mauna Lani bay looks really nice too!

Ok ok Two Step is known as Pu'uhonua O Honaunau or Place of Refuge or simply Homaunau. It got the nick name Two Step because of the formation of the volcanic rocks where you enter the water.

The snorkeling is also good in the bay right where St Peter’s church is (where we got hitched). There is also a surf school there so you can watch surfers when you’re not snorkeling. It’s north of Kona.
