Just make sure to check your SS statement every year I almost got screwed out of my last work years earnings. After many months of calling and emails to my previous employer and payroll company and SS- the persistence paid off. Finally this past Sept. I got a revised statement showing my earnings for 2018, but prior to that I was able to see them finally reported online as well.

My husband was not as lucky. Many years ago he had a SS statement showing $0 earnings for a particular year and the employer went out of business o no way of getting any records. He no longer had pay stubs or tax files from that year either as it was long past, and it was a higher earning year that would have been counted, but that is lost. We even tried to get proof from the IRS- but no luck.

Oh well...just stay on top of it each year.

The easiest way I've found to keep on top of my income (for the last 10 years) is to keep a PDF of the returns. Since I do it with H&R Block for the past 11-ish years, I save the PDF on a USB drive. That way, if I find the numbers don't match up (I won't hit Medicare age until 2037), I have that backup. Saving W2s may help also.
