The Rise of Coffee Shaming
Personal-finance gurus really hate coffee.

Suze Orman wants young people to stop “peeing” away millions of dollars on coffee. Last month, the personal-finance celebrity ignited a controversy on social media when a video she starred in for CNBC targeted a familiar villain: kids these days and their silly $5 lattes. Because brewing coffee at home is less expensive, Orman argued, purchasing it elsewhere is tantamount to flushing money away, which makes it a worthy symbol of Millennials’ squandered resources.
About 20 years ago I worked with a guy who had been married for a few years, with one child, another on the way, and plans for more.

We were having lunch together one day, and he was commenting about how difficult it was to get the money put away for buying a house. He was a big guy - he had been a 3-year starter on the offensive line at a prominent NCAA Division 1 school. He had $20 of food on his plate - again this is ~1998 money. He went out for lunch every day, and this was typical for him.

I pointed out to him that he could probably bring a similar amount of food from home and it would cost him about $5 - homemade sandwiches, leftovers, etc.. If he did that 200 meals per year, that was $3000 per year that he could put into housing.

I suggested that he was literally eating himself out of house and home.

I haven't bought coffee or drinks with meals for over 20 years now. I just ask for water. Also no Starbucks for me. Get my coffee fix in the morning with my trusty Mr Coffee. At home all I drink is sugar free lemonade made from powder and tap water. I'm sure I have saved a ton of money. Just never calculated it...

Thankfully never drank coffee of any kind. Do not drink pop. I am happy with water at meals when I have some confidence in the water. Will order beer if it is under a $1 a bottle. Can be asolé as 65 cents. If more then a $1 I’ll think about it and sometimes splurge for a craft beer of up to $5 but that’s more for location and will sample a few first.

More then anything I am happy to drink water.

I do drink Starbucks maybe 4x/mo. It’s even a weekend treat for my kiddies. I consider it a luxury not necessity.
I do get coffee free at work but it’s not the best. There is a crew at work who use a Kerig which saves as well. You save where you can.

I remember a 'Prairie Home Companion' bit where Garrison Keillor said, "Thank goodness for Starbucks, who taught us that it is OK to spend $5 on a 10 cent cup of coffee". I shake my head in amazement when passing a Dutch Bros. or Starbux and see the line around the building. I can count on one hand the number of 'fancy coffee drinks' I've ordered in the last several years. OTOH, our grown 'kids' first order-of-the-day is to dress and go for 'coffee' and the Yeti full is seldom out of reach all day.

Water water water
No coffee ,no soda , no dairy , no alcohol.

Water is the only fluid my body needs.

I do buy bottled water and some might say I am contributing to pollution etc. The tap water at my house sucks even with a filter. When I travel to places with good tap or well water I drink it

I don't buy Starbucks at all, but my grandkids love it, and I do buy them an occasional gift card for it. I don't get it, personally. i can buy caramel creamer and brew great coffee at home.

Occasionally we do stop at Starbucks. Usually at Seatac or to meet people. Starbucks is a decent day venue for a meeting of about any kind, imo. Maybe three visits a year and for me it is a Mocha Grande and scone.

Discussing expensive coffee, some of the guys I know frequent the alternative coffee shop for a five dollar holler.

Many of my young relatives, mostly the females, go to Starbucks and now Dutch Brothers and hang out. For the cost of a cup of coffee they have a safe clean place to chill. I think its worth it. In my day we went to Little Johns Tavern and I'm certain we spent more money hanging out in a place that wasn't as clean and certainly not as safe as Starbucks, lol.

She is wrong but she is not. Many of the younger staff who work for me get a couple of Starbucks during the day. $10/day maybe? still not pissing away millions. $10/day for 30 years at 4% would be $208K. At 8% $447K.

the $10 a day I haven't spent at Starbux has probably increased my net worth or.....

"maybe it’s just easier to blame people for overspending on coffee because it’s a lot more difficult to give advice on the many things they cannot control: wages not keeping pace with the cost of living, the high cost of health insurance, housing, child care, paying for college, etc. But … coffee! You can control the coffee!"

Why do these people always hit the younger generation on spending habits. I see a lot of older people in starbucks also. Our generation (boomer) was criticized for going out to eat so much. Lifestyles change and it is no body's business but their own. I am sure there are some people that need to change their spending habits. Of those people I would guess that starbucks is a minor part of the problem. I am not a big starbucks user. I go occasionally with friends as a social outing. I also like to go to breweries where I spend much more for beer than I would at home. My choice.

This amuses me, because technically I am an xennial/old millenial. I don't buy daily starbucks or whatever. My ~60 year old coworker buys coffee everyday at Sbux/Local coffee place and smokes. I hate this dang "generation" commentaries :)

Your water can't possibly taste worse than San Diego's and I seem to be able to taste things that no one else can (so I am picky) and I find that a PUR filter can make our water taste like it should. Brita isn't enough for me, I can still taste it, but PUR makes all the difference in the world. I think that it is a triple filter.

My drink of choice - filtered water. Drinks I also drink: pellegrino, iced tea, beer, wine, mai tai's, coffee....

We only have a standard coffee from Starbucks when we are on a driving vacation to keep us alert on long drives. Other than that, Starbucks is not making much money from us. I would agree that young people spend too much on Starbucks, and latest and greatest Apple and other smart phone products.

We lunch out everyday and always order drinks with our lunch as we both cannot stand the taste of tap water at restaurants. We pat ourselves on our backs that we no longer have breakfast out and we have dinner in 6 days a week. That is real savings when we used to have 3 meals out a day while we were working. If I have my druthers, we will be having lunches at home on most days but that does not fly with my husband.

I know many at 60+ that still smoke a pack a day and hit the coffee stores. Oddly, when some of these people turn 62 they collect social security and head to the casino.

Me, I'm going to spend my money on more timeshares and trips, lol. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I used to buy a Starbucks every day a few years back and then an epiphany happened and after a year I convinced my office to purchase a coffee maker. Now that money goes towards my travels

Suze has been on the no expensive coffee kick for years. When we were working and Cliff was out installing, he often stopped at 7-11 for what he says is excellent coffee. That tip came from our occasional "second pair of hands" installer (used to be full time until we discovered he had poached a client). Cliff only drinks a cup of Starbucks if I want to stop for a frappacino. Fraps are the only thing I buy there except on cold days when I might order a hot mocha. The company used to pay to refill our Starby's cards, but since we retired last October we are mostly just using our old cards up. Having a "gold card" gets me an occasional perk, but I've yet been able to take advantage of a free grande drink on my birthday because we are always in Big Bear and we get up late and by the time I'd be ready for a frap after breakfast it is too close to dinner! Christmas 2017 he bought me a Keurig, so now we rarely make potted coffee unless we have company or it's a big breakfast sip all day Sunday. He bought a bunch of fill-your-own K cups, but we are generally too lazy to fuss with them. He did learn from a friend to stretch a pod by using it twice, first on small cup button, then on small or medium button. But he drinks four or more cups a day. At most I have two (we only buy decaf), but usually just one.

My daughter buys a coffee, sometimes two, each day. Reason is because she gets up very early to commute to work, doesn't have time to make coffee in the morning and uses it to wake up, which I understand completely. She also packs her lunch every day.

I am guilty of buying at Starbucks. They opened one right in my neighborhood. So after walking with my neighborhood ladies we usually stop there, grab a drink and finish whatever we were chatting:). It's more a social thing.

She isn't. I watched her show for years and she had a few callers about timeshare. At least she didn't send them to the Timeshare Exit Team like some other "financial guru".

We just moved to FLorida and the water isn't great. It isn't horrible, but I don't really like the taste. I am considering a reverse osmosis filter that fits under the sink. I would like to use it for ice cubes too, but the fridge with the ice maker is on the other side of the kitchen from the sink. I guess I could always use ice cube trays.

They do make coffee makers with timers on them. So when you get up the coffee is ready. Keurig is also fast.

This is me. I have my coffee waiting in a stainless thermal carafe. Every once in a while I have a senior moment and forget to hit the button. When I get up the disappointment is staggering and I do not have anywhere I have to be.
