We will be going to Sedona in early October. We will fly into Phoenix in the early afternoon on a Saturday, but check-in at the resort will not be until afternoon on Sunday.

We are looking for suggestions for enjoying 24+ hours between the airport in Phoenix and the resort in Sedona. This is our first time in the area.

We are considering spending the night in Scottsdale before heading north, but we are open to other suggestions for lodging, dining, art galleries, and/or other activities in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area or on the road to Sedona.

The following Sunday, we will drive from Sedona to Tucson to visit my sister-in-law for a couple of days, so we are open to suggestions for that end of the trip, too.

I'll start a different thread with questions about activities during our actual week in Sedona.

Thanks you.

The Heard Museum and the Museum of Musical Instruments in Scottsdale/Phoenix are wonderful! On the way to Sedona (or doubling back to catch them while staying in Sedona) are Arcosanti (a communal living/ art community) and Montezuma's Castle.

Old Scottsdale is a very fun place with lots of very interesting shops and great restaurants. Tuscon has the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, well worth a visit as is Saguaro National Park. If you are at all into Aviation, don't miss the Pima Air and Space Museum and about a half hour south of Tuscon is the Titan Missile Museum. You will run out of time before you run out of things to do and see in both Phoenix/Scottsdale and Tuscon! Also, while in Sedona, be sure to make the trip over to Jerome. Enjoy your trip!

With regard to a place to stay you may want to consider Marriott's Desert Ridge or Westin Kierland Villas for potential timeshare units. Both of these resorts also have a JW Marriott and Westin Kierland Resort, respectively, if you prefer a high quality hotel? Another timeshare is Sheraton Desert Oasis, which should run lower than the others. Each of the timeshares offer 1BR and Guest rooms.

Have a great time.

Best regards.

So many good suggestions already! Thank you!

It sounds as though there is plenty to do in Scottsdale, so we will stay there Saturday evening and try to go to Taliesin West on Sunday before we head north. Hopefully the other suggested museums will be open during our brief time there.

I have heard of Montezuma's Castle but don't know anything about it, so I will check out details. The Arcosanti (a communal living/ art community) is a new idea. Thank you.

We have an exchange week at The Ridge at Sedona Golf Course, so we don't need timeshare suggestions, but we will need a place to stay for one night in Scottsdale and for 3 nights in Oro Valley near Tucson. My sister-in-law just sold her house in that area, so we have missed our chance to stay in her cozy casita. We can join her for meals in her new retirement community, but we have to find our own lodging.

We are really looking forward to this trip! My husband just retired from teaching, so this is the first time we have been able to travel in the fall.

Montezuma castle is very interesting. It was a cliff pueblo occupied by the sinagua indians for perhaps a 100-150 years before they moved on. It is close to Prescott and is a better trip from Sedona than Phoenix. It is a nice day trip from Sedona. Jerome is another nice day trip from Sedona. Take the train trip by Cornville (?).

October should generally be good weather in Phoenix (warm but probably not unreasonable). Sedona should be fantastic.

When you're in Sedona, if you like really good steaks, consider going to the Silver Saddle room of the cowboy club in Uptown Sedona. Order the buffalo sirloin with mushrooms and onions. And/or consider going to Rene's in Tlacapaci. We just came back from Sedona. We stayed at Pinon Point. It was great.

The Music Museum in Scottsdale is excellent--not what you'd expect, very interactive, gets very high marks from visitors.
The Heard Museum is one of the finest in the Southwest for Native American information.

We like to stay at Talking Stick resort in central Scottsdale on the 101 freeway when transitioning from Phoenix to Sedona. Its a nice casino resort with a golf course and driving range. One exit north is an aquarium and butterfly wonderland.

For Tucson the Desert Museum is a must do ,one of the top 10 zoos in the country , has a hummingbird room where you can watch them up close, an underwater beaver exhibit. It is a fascinating study with great exhibits on desert living, minerals and animals. The drive down through Gates Pass is gorgeous, one of the best places to watch the sun set in Tucson. Sabino Canyon is a wonderful spot for hiking or even taking the tram to the top and walking down.
