Someone hit my car and drove off

Yesterday I had a luncheon followed by cards with a group of ladies at the club. I came out to find that someone had backed into my car, causing right rear end damage. No note was left. Went back into the club, none of the staff witnessed it nor was there a report to them.

I called my insurer and opened a claim. I got estimates from 3 body shops, two of them came in at about $1.8K, a third one said that he believed there was damage to metal parts that were not exposed and refused to give a "worst case" scenario estimate. His "cosmetics" estimates came in at $2.4K. We picked one of the other two body shops. I have a $1K deductible and we decide to suck it up. I told the insurer to put the claim on hold and after the repair is done and if the amount does not blow up from there, we will close the claim.

One body shop estimator said "Wow, only 7K miles on the car and it is practically new." Yes, it hurts.

We just sold our second car 2 weeks ago and used the money to buy a golf cart. Car goes into the body shop on Monday and we will also have to pay for a rental car for 5 days while in the workshop.

I am pissed but there is nothing I can do about it.

Did you check to see if there were any security cameras?

Old guy might chime in. We were parked at a restaurant parking lot in Branson, on vacation. For some reason we stopped at the door and said something to the owner. We heard a crash. Some uninsured woman drove backwards down the street, swerved into the parking lot, smashed into our car, bounced off, hit it again and smashed it into a brand new car next to us. We would have been just getting into the car and would have been severely injured if we hadn’t stopped at that moment. Our car was totaled we had a hard time getting back home a couple of states away. Not only did we not get a penny, but Missouri kept sending us forms to fill out and kept threatening to have our license revoked.

Our insurance has a lower deductible for this situation. Our 500 deductible became 250. Have you checked your policy?

Ditto. Someone hit our parked car. Our insurance had a $250 deductible for this situation, compared to $500 if we were at fault. The only requirement was to call the police, file a police report, get hr police report number, and five it to the insurance company.

As noted above, call the local police department and file a report regardless if your insurance wants or needs it. Often, you may have not been the only one who sustained damage from this driver. A few minutes of your time can prove valuable.

Nope. The country club said there was no security camera in front of the club where my vehicle was parked. I had a webcam thingy in my car but I removed it months ago because it was annoying me to death.

AFAIK The difference is if it is collision or comprehensive. If you are not in the vehicle I think it falls under comprehensive, which has the lower deductible.

Not to sound ageist, there are 2 men's (large) groups, comprise mainly of older guys, which finished their rounds around lunch time and I bet it is one of the guys who hit our car while leaving after lunch. I am thinking about bringing it up to these 2 groups and see if someone will fess up.

Vacation, that might work. Not everyone will like each other or be willing to cover for another. Do file a police report.

You could check some other cars the next time they are there. They may have sustained damage or scratches too, or have some of your paint rubbed off on their car.

I'm sorry to hear you're going through this hassle and expense. I had a similar thing happen to me a few years ago and ended up having to pay my $750 hit and run deductible. One of the features I really like on my new car is that it has a security mode (sentry mode) that allows you to record video surrounding the car whenever something comes within a few feet of it.

I hope you don't lose too much sleep over this, as for me personally getting needlessly stressed out is the worst part!

Wow! Sorry about your car! That's terrible! I agree about filing a police report. Any color transfer onto your car?

My boy backed into a car in a very tight parking lot, went in to find the person.
Wife was ok but the husband was an ass chewed him out the whole time making him feel terrible. Was about $1400 "claimed" damage they said, we paid it out of pocket as we had 2 teens driving to protect our insurance keeping it intact if something major happened..
Don't think they used the money to fix it, my boy said after that experience if he had to do it over again he would have / will drive off.
They should have praised him for doing the right thing, just can't win.

    Also
Insurance companies won’t tell you this but there’s a thing called diminished value where you use a formula to come up with a $$ amount on what the car has dropped in value due to a marked title

Check in to it and see if you qualify

The other big difference is that if it falls under comprehensive, a claim does not affect future insurance rates (at least that is true with my insurer). So if the damage is $1 over the deductible, there is no reason not to file a claim.

The only state that recognizes this is Georgia. In all the other states you have to prove the loss of value and it could cost you a lot of money. In other words, the burden of proof falls on you. This from my husband who does it for a living.

You can only go after the person's policy who hit you, not your own. It is not covered under your policy if you are the victim.

Well I guess i was hit by something other than a vehicle. So that is why mine was considering as comprehensive.

Correct. If you get hit by a rock, a tree branch, animals, or fire or vandalism, a shopping cart, etc. that is comprehensive.

I agree - start looking for someone with matching damage. I'm sorry that it happened. I have been there and it is very annoying!

I've had it happen three times over the years. The first time it happened our "good" car (a 1979ish Ford Pinto, lol) a woman hit it and drove off. It totaled the car. Unfortunately for us we were in the process of buying our first home and couldn't qualify for our first mortgage and have a car loan. The car was still driveable so the insurance company gave us the pink slip and my husband drove that awful car for another year. Haha, the things that we did back in the day!

The other two times that it happened to us, our cars were parked on the curb. In the first case a young driver was speeding down our hill and failed to make the curve. Somehow the police were involved in that one (can't remember the details) but the driver was not insured. We were stuck with the bill but we had low deductibles so we were only out $250. A few years later it was a hit and run, but one of our neighbors saw it happen and followed the guy down the street and got his information for us. As I recall it happened early in the morning (~7:00am). The guy was coming home from one of the local Indian casinos - he had been gambling all night. I suspect that alcohol was involved. Luckily, he had insurance. But what a hassle. After that we started parking our Suburban on the curb. We figured that no one could miss that car. We haven't had any issues for 13 years. Knock on wood.
