We’re looking at staying at Shadow Ridge for 5 nights this spring with 2 kids (6 and 4) in a 2 BR Villa. How are the villas there? Have they been renovated recently like Desert Springs Villas? I’ve read that Shadow Ridge really caters to young children, but I’ve also read that some of the rooms there are showing their age.

Just wanted to get thoughts from folks that have stayed at Shadow Ridge recently...

Thanks!!!

We own there and love it there. I don't know about DSV renovations, but the units at Shadow Ride are always up to Marriott standards. Lots of great kids activities there as well. Spring time is great weather.

We were just there and enjoy Shadow Ridge Villages. Nice pools, lots of activities, movie theater that serves popcorn, and feels like a resort.

Great views of the mountains. I do not believe they have been updated recently. Seems same decor with different curtains. Units have always been in good shape though. Smaller units then DSI. We have not stayed at II.

We prefer shadow ridge pools and activities for our kids. Enclaves have very small units and for that reason Villages is our preference.

We were there in December and enjoyed it.

Marriott changes all softgoods every 5 years, changes other things at 10 years and does the hardgoods (including cabinetry) every 15. So nothing is too old. They shampoo their carpets quarterly.

Perhaps it would make sense to just call S.R. and ask where they are on the refurbs (if someone else d/n have more specific advice).

Honestly, all the units there are perfectly nice, but they are currently in a refurbishment cycle. In 2018, the buildings 2000, 2100, 2200, 2300 were refurbished.

In 2019, the buildings across from the quiet pool are to be done. If you want a refreshed room, ask.

But I would be happy in any Villages location. The whole Villages area is a lot more spaciously laid out than the Enclaves area. But both are nice. Regardless of where we stay, we do spend one pool day at each pool, Chuckwalla and Snake Bites. They have a different vibe and we like both.

We prefer quiet and always ask to be put in the buildings near the quiet pool, so 2900 or 3000. The rooms closest to the Chuckwalla pool are the most heavily used and therefore more likely to "be showing their age". But it is a Marriott resort, so its not like they're run down or anything.

Here you can see what was just completed around the resort:

Hi Janice, just curious form your comments (we're heading out in 4 weeks) if the buildings around the "quiet pool" (adult only pool?) are facing in towards the golf course/mountains or out towards a main road as far as views are concerned. Thank you

AFAIK, there really isn't a quiet pool or an adults' only pool. In fact in California most resorts think that they are vulnerable to age discrimination lawsuits to label a pool as adults only. There is a pool on the west side (closest to Monterrey) that is a bit quieter. The pool is NOT facing the golf course. It, the pool, is "kind of" facing Monterrey but there is a 6 foot wall so that you can't see Monterrey from the pool area. Also, I don't recall hearing any Monterrey traffic from the pool. Also, the units nearest to the west quieter pool are faced in the other direction. That is, your lanai/patio faces East - - in the opposite direction of Monterrey. So, yes, the unit lanai's are kind of pointed towards some mountains. But the most significant mountains are to the south and some others to the north. Those units are, IIRC, primarily facing some ponds or golf course areas.

So if you get a unit by the quiet-er pool, you'll have a pleasant view.

Here is a resort map.

https://www.marriottvacationclub.eu/common/cms/mvc/pdfs/resortmaps/shadowRidgeResortMap.pdf

Building 2900 overlooks one of the golf course greens. It is a pleasant and quiet location in this popular resort. Ditto to what BJRSanDiego says, the pool has no view at all, but you will have a pleasant enough view from your balcony, no matter where you are situated in this resort.

The pool is not "adults only" but it also contains nothing appealing to kids, ie water features, pool slides like the other pools have.
