1) Where do you want your home resort to be?

Massanutten, already purchased a timeshare at this resort. I like the resort and it is a two hour drive from home so it is easy/cheap to get to. Wish I had gone the resale route, but what can you do.

2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time?

My wife wants to visit all 50 states. I think she has 20-25 more states to visit so I see doing more exchanging then staying at the home resort.

3) What are your 5 top trade destinations?

Hawaii/Colorado/Montana/Washington to cover some places my wife has never visited. I think Orlando will be a common vacation in 5-6 years when our son is old enough to enjoy the amusement parks.

4) How many people do you usually travel with?

I think most trips will be me, my wife, our son, and my parents. It is possible that there will be years when one or both of my sisters families will want to go along as well. So probably 5-11 people.

5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule?

Not locked into the school schedule yet, but that will change in five years.

6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance?

Yes

7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time?

Yes

8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars?

3+: Doesn't have to be too fancy, but like having a kitchen and places with plenty of room for the family to hang out.

9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing?

Right now, probably $1k-2k. Maybe a little more if the right deal came along.

10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year?

I'm thinking around $1200 is reasonable. Current unit is $400 a year.

11) Are you a detail oriented planner?

Yes, either myself or my wife tend to do a lot of research and planning for vacations.

12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do?

Yes

Quick overview of my current situation. Purchased a timeshare 3 years ago at Massanutten. Exchanged it a couple times and was semi-happy with it, but felt like there was a lot of luck to exchange to some of the better rated resorts. Went back to Massanutten for a weekend and got talked into upgrading to a points unit since that is suppose to make it easier to exchange and give us more options for exchanging. Current unit is worth 58,000 points a year with a $400 MF.

I wanted to get more information on how to best use those points and found this website. Like most, I wish I had found it before I purchased anything, but that ship has sailed. After some reading and learning about the resale market, I'm thinking about trying to find another unit to go along with the current one. I think with an additional 100k points we could easily do two weeks a year at good resorts during off-peak times, and have the ability to do a nicer resort or a prime week on occasion. The extra points would also be useful if additional family members want to join us as well.

Given all of that information, does it make sense to invest more into RCI points, or is there a better option out there?

Your cost per RCI point could be a lot worse, so don't despair there. Since you're sunk money into RCI points, I think it would make sense to find something like a Grandview Las Vegas week with 122K points resale. That would cost you $2K-$3K up front, and current MF on that 2 bedroom would be about $750. 180K points is a nice amount to work with, especially if you can make last minute plans and take advantage of points-reduced offerings.

Worldmark kind of ticks the boxes for most of your criteria. It sounds like your trade destination wish list is mostly out west where Worldmark is strongest. Worldmark doesn't participate in RCI Weeks (which I'm completely unfamiliar with) so this would be a departure from what you're used to.

Here's a list of Worldmark Resorts:

(Note: it's only the red dots on the map you'll have access to with a resale purchase)

Jack, you wouldn't be the first to own in more than one system. The Massanutten will give you a good, low cost, drive-to resort. Then if you buy into something like Worldmark on resale, you can come in fairly close to your $1200 annual nut, with better access to Western resorts. Win-Win.
