DW & I will be in Waikiki for 2 weeks starting on 9/8. We're staying at the Alohilani Resort. Looking for suggestions for both good places to eat and places to visit besides the big attractions like a luau,The Arizona, and the beach. We can't snorkel or do dinner cruises as DW gets motion sickness.

Here are a few ideas:

Nico's Pier 38 Restaurant in the downtown Honolulu area is one of the best seafood restaurants in town. Not fancy, but fish is same-day catch, fresh off the boat. It doesn't ever get better than this. Go during Happy Hour for best pricing (dinner entrees are at Happy Hour pricing.). https://nicospier38.com

If Hawaiian Culture and history interest you, the Bishop Museum is a must-see. It showcases the entire South Pacific region, with artifacts, dioramas, and great information. Lots of Hawaiian historic items. Plan to spend at least half a day there. https://www.bishopmuseum.org

And then follow it up with a trip to Iolani Palace, for the rest of the story. https://www.iolanipalace.org

If you'll have a car, driving over to the Windward Side of the island, stop at the Pali Lookout for an amazing view of that side of the island. https://www.gohawaii.com/islands/oahu/regions/windward-coast/nuuanu-pali-lookout

Then as you're driving toward the North Shore, stop in Sunset Beach at Ted's Bakery for a piece of Chocolate Haupia Pie. It's legendary. https://www.tedsbakery.com

In Haleiwa, stop at the Coffee Gallery for some amazing Hawaiian-Grown espresso coffee. https://www.yelp.com/biz/coffee-gallery-haleiwa

In Waikiki, Duke's is a great beachfront bar and restaurant. Crowded, and getting a table can be a challenge, but the food and drinks are worthwhile. https://www.dukeswaikiki.com

The Waikiki Aquarium has a fantastic amount of displays that showcase fish from everywhere, with an emphasis on Hawaiian species. There's a tank in front with baby Humuhumunukunukuapua'a that are very friendly. https://www.waikikiaquarium.org

Friday night the Hilton sets off fireworks just after dark. Make your way to the paved beachwalk in front of the Hale Koa hotel, just next to the Hilton complex, and get a table in the barefoot beach bar out front. Have some food and a drink or two, and watch the fireworks. The Hale Koa is a military hotel, but that beach bar is open to the public. Any night is good, but if you want to see the fireworks, Fridays are the night to go. https://www.halekoa.com/dining-drinks/barefoot-bar

DaveNW thanks for the list. I'll add them to our list. I'd heard about the aquarium and we will have access to it just before our luau. We were planning to rent a car for a day or 2 to see the North Shore so we'll be sure to stop at Ted's.

At the Alohilani resort check out the Friday night sunset yoga class! My daughter Jordan teaches it! She’s been timesharing since she was in Elementary and has lived in Honolulu for the last three or so years!

You can hike to the top of Diamond Head. If you are a Senior or Retired Military you can get an all day Pass for the buses for a couple dollars. If you want to eat like a local go to the Rainbow DriveIn.

If you're in Waikiki, you should at least walk through the lobby of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, and maybe have a drink at their beachfront Mai Tai Bar. The Moana Surfrider is another classic hotel. For breakfast, grab a coffee and fresh pastry to go at the Honolulu Coffee out front, walk straight through the lobby, at sit under the giant banyan tree to eat and enjoy watching the waves. Duke's breakfast buffet is awesome, and it's a great place for lunch and dinner too. The Hula Grill on the 2nd floor above Duke's is a quieter, more romantic place for dinner, and you can still get a good view of the ocean.

If you have a car and want an awesome panoramic view from Diamond Head to the airport, drive up to the Tantalus Lookout at Puu Ualakaa State Park.

My favorite thing to do in Waikiki is to take pictures of beer trucks: https://artringwald.smugmug.com/Travel/Beer-Trucks-of-Waikiki/

Art, that is such a cool and eclectic photo set! Thanks for sharing.

I got started taking those pictures because I was one of the developers of a digital printer that printed full color truck size graphics.
