Hi, I'm new to the forum and TS. I have a question. My family is traveling to New Zealand in May 2018 for a week. I recently just bought a DRI TS ( I was scam I know, but too late to do it now so I'm trying to make the most of it). I only bought 5k points so that would equal to a week in a US resort. It is 18k points for a resort in NZ with DRI. My question is the best way to be in NZ. Can I rent it from someone? should I buy resell or is it better to just rent from the resort itself. There are 6 people going.

Thanks. Any help would do

New Zealand is a large country/area. Do you have an idea where in NZ are you all travelling to? If you want to explore NZ, I find that the best way to see NZ is either with land tour or on a cruise.

Good question. Many people rent a motor home (they call them 'caravans') on one island and drive it wherever they want and turn it in on the other island. We've cruised New Zealand, and enjoyed it, but as I've said about a bazillion times, a cruise is a LOUSY way to experience a different culture.

Jim

p.s. They have these 'serviced apartments' there that are like timeshare units with maid service. iirc the one we used in Auckland was called 'Waldorf'.

we are only going for a week, thats the week befire memorial day. I'm just starting to plan our trip and have not decided where to go so I'm researcging right now. so anywhere is fine as cause i heard everywhere in NZ was great and 1 wk would not be enough. So I was looking for rooms, plane tickets, and lots of things to do so I can start making plans. Any recommendations?

wish I had that much time, sadly I only have 1 wk . any recommendations for where I should spend my wk?
I am not a NZ local and since I have only been there once, I will leave it to NZ locals to make the recommendation. NZ is a beautiful country.

I am in early planning phase to go back to NZ for about 3 weeks with my husband in 2020 and we plan to do it as a land tour (again) or on a cruise.

I've only been to NZ once for a month and didn't have enough time. With just a week, I'd concentrate on one area. If you are flying from the US, that will eat up a day or two both directions. Personally, a week just wouldn't be worth the long flight. If you aren't in an aircraft or airport, you'd be fighting jet lag.
With just a week, I'd concentrate on one area. Late May is winter; equivalent to late November in the US. The climate ranges widely from north to south with north being much warmer so I would focus on the north part of the North Island for your timeframe. There is so much variety, that you can quickly get overwhelmed with all your options. I'd pick one island and focus on that and then narrow down from there. Auckland will involve less flight times, and the weather is better so I'd go with the North Island. I was there in March (fall) and it was way too humid and hot for me in Auckland so doing that area so May would be much better. Save the South Island for a time when you can go in their summer/fall.
I did a quick check in Interval and found nothing for exchange in NZ for your timeframe, but there is a Getaway that might work. Check it out. Finding a 2-3 BR this late in the exchange options will be tough. However, there are lots of self-catering places; i.e. motels or apartments with kitchens. This is what I used for my trip and I used the NZ version of AAA as a resource. It would also give you more flexibility.

If I remember correctly the DRI Resort is on South Island.

Two separate times we have spent a week in the Rotorua Area. There are several timeshares in the area. Also in the Rotorua Area are Mud Baths, Museum, etc. This is a very geothermal active area. Interesting to walk around parts of the town and see steam coming through the pavers. There is the geothermal park Wai-O-Tapu about 30 minutes south of town. In town is also Rainbow Springs Nature Park with a Kiwi Hatchery. The Main Glow Worm Caves are a day trip. If you are a Tolkien Nut (like Patti) you can drive to Hobbiton and do a tour.

We have also spent a week in Pahia (Bay of Islands) and had a great time.

Good luck getting a place with only about 6 months notice.

For a one week stay, you should center around Auckland and venture out to the nearby attractions. Not sure if there is timeshare in Auckland, but Airbnb and serviced apartments mentioned above should be able to accommodate a party of 6.

+1 on this advice. There is much to do- certainly to fill a week. With a 15ish hour flight each way, and some recuperation time, that won't leave much for exploration, and there are Maori sites fairly nearby that will give a glimpse of the culture. You'll have to leave the wonderful scenery and fjords of South Island for another trip, as a week there will just be a 'teaser'.

thank you everyone for the great advice. I'll concentrate on Auckland and see if I can find places for 6 people. I know this is late in the game, but to get 6 people to schedule everything at the same time is hard to do. Hopefully I can get a place and kill anyone who back out of it later :)
