    hi everyone,
Heading for the first time to Wkv in 3 weeks. Car rental is super expensive compared to everywhere else we have gone including Maui ( don’t remember ). There’s going to be 5-6 of us, with 2 being children. What have some if you done? Uber it around, waymo or just rented a car? I know people are going to say depends on what your doing. But I’m just curious about the rest of you. Please share your experience.

Whoops how do I edit the title?

    Thanks

It’s expensive because of spring training. Maybe drive in from somewhere else.

It's the ol' supply and demand. Out of 12 months each year, demand is highest in March for Spring Training. Everything spikes - hotels, flights. For that large of a group, divide the cost. Ride share service pricing is also adjusted to the demand and Kierland is lovely but anywhere you go will be a distance. Things are really spread out here.
Unless you plan to spend nearly all your time on the property, renting a vehicle will be your most economical solution.
May I ask what you plan to do?

When rentals are expensive sometimes doing this helps reduce the cost.

1 day rental from airport with a drop off at a 'local' rental facility near wherever I am staying.

Balance of the week with a pick up at that local location with a drop off at the airport.

It will definitely save all the daily airport fees. For my upcoming Labor day stay at Kierland I'm saving over $100

Same here or I will Uber to the offsite rental facility if my arrival time at the airport is when the facility is still open.

We make it to Kierlands at least once a year. We used to rent a car from the airport. Now we typically take an Uber to the Kierland villas and spend our first
few days there hanging around the Kierland area... lots of things to do and places to eat. The shuttle will take you to the grocery store and to the Commons and the Quarters. We typically walk to them but the shuttle would be available to you. We then pick up a car from Enterprise which is located at the Kierland Resort (the hotel). We keep it as long as we want and then return it back at the hotel and Uber to the airport when departing. Doing it this way usually knocks a couple days of car rental off and you avoid paying the airport taxes. I'm not sure how it works when taking an Uber with 5-6 people. Enjoy Kierlands... It's wonderful!

Thank you all, we haven't decided to do much. But yes, was thinking of getting a Uber to the resort, then maybe just rent on a daily basis out, depending on what we want to do. Glad to know there is a shuttle to take us to all the places we need to go to. It's our first time there and its our home resort, didn't realize that spring training affected it that much.

The area will be packed. Spring training is a hugely popular time of year. The Dodgers, Angels and Padres train there and are driving distance. The Chicago teams also train there and it gives people a good reason to get out of Chicago.

We go there around the 3rd week of January for the Barrett-Jackson auction. That is also a huge draw for Scottsdale, as there are actually several different auctions going on at the same time. We always rent a car from the airport because we do so much driving around, not just to West World, but there are so many other things to do there. I recommend the day trip to the Grand Canyon from the resort. It's a long day, roughly a 12 hour van trip, but worth it. They also give you time to see Sedona. The aquarium and butterfly museum are also a nice day trip.

I have always rented a car. If you are only planning to pool, dine and shop you could do without a car because the resort area includes Kierland Commons but if you are looking to do much off property, a car is best. My kids loved the children's museum, and the zoo when they were younger.

We are at WKV in Mid-March again with our kids, ages 5 and 3. At those ages, with Uber either you lug 2 car seats around with you everywhere or you take the safety risk of going without or having your ride refused. So we just rent a car. As others have mentioned if you just want to stay around the resort and do some light shopping/restaurant visits there is plenty to do within range of the shuttle. For us, we do a bunch of half day excursions (zoo, aquarium, train park, children's museum, etc) so its worth it to just do the car rental. But yes it is pricey. We ended up with a mid-sized SUV from Thrifty (PHX airport pickup/dropoff) for the week for about US$445 all in. Not great, but worth the convenience for us. It helps a bit that there is free parking at the villas. If you only needed the car for a few days then renting from the car rental counter in the hotel may save a few dollars.

Check off-airport car rental locations. Can be significantly cheaper. Uber from airport to that location. It's even faster than taking a car rental shuttle to the airport car rental and then standing in a huge line there to get your car.
