Does anyone know if you can make a reservation on American Airlines for a coach seat on one leg of a flight, say from Austin to LAX, and then reserve a 1st class seat from LAX to Hawaii, when initially making the reservation. If this is possible how does one accomplish this?

You can...
If using the AA booking engine, on the page where you enter the airports and dates, there's a menu item for fare type (choose lowest or flexible) and another one for class. For class, choose "show all." On the next page where it lists the flight options, it should show fares for basic economy, main cabin or first for each flight listed.

Other booking engines should have a similar option.

Interesting. I wasn’t aware it could be done online. I’ve always just called and had them do it for us

I did what was suggested and got the price for each class of tickets. What I want to do is book a flight from AUS to KOA with 1 stop in LAX. I want coach class to LAX and first class from LAX to KOA. Can this be done? And if so, how?

Sorry about that, Chief.
Try booking the trip as a multi-city trip. Enter the segments for which you want a different class as a separate city-pair.
I dunno if that'll work as some booking engines don't allow you to do that for same day trips, but it's what I'd try.
