"The Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest programs are being integrated as we speak, and it sure isn’t taking long for Hilton to try and poach elites.

I remember Hilton ran an aggressive status match campaign shortly after Marriott’s takeover of Starwood was announced, but now they’re taking out some targeted Facebook ads that I sort of dig.

My friend Scott sent me a screenshot he saw on Facebook promoting Hilton status matches, with the following caption:

Since when does Hilton offer free breakfast at all of its brands? I'm a Hilton Honors member and have never gotten a free breakfast at Hilton or Hilton Garden Hotels.

Gold and Diamond Levels get free breakfast at Hiltons. A vey nice perk which is one reason Hilton is the first place I look for hotel reservations. I have Gold status at Marriott but there are many exceptions to the free breakfast.

Then the Hilton ad needs to be more clear.

True but the double tree in front of my condo I have stayed at many times has the worst hotel (buffet) breakfast in the city. Steamed brocoli, carrots and cauliflower is what I mostly have to go for. I eat it for nutrition but it is not breakfast food.

Most hotel restaurants I have been to have coffee that is barely drinkable. My preference is to use the coffee maker in my room. Not much better but at least it’s fresh and hot.

Recently in Oregon the breakfast buffet had fresh Oregon berries every day. It was the only thing I would eat and the berries were wonderful.

It mentions Elite status three times in 4 sentences.
Fine. But some of us (maybe only me?) need to know what "elite" status is. I guess maybe if you don't know what it is, it means you don't have it.

Is Hilton matching Marriott's elite status? If so, how do we go about to get our Hilton status upgraded?

You need 75,000 points to be Hilton Gold. Either by staying at a Hilton property and accumulating 5,000 points per night or using your Hilton Honors card for purchases. If you get the Hilton Honors Amex you are automatically silver status. I was silver then was bumped to gold until I used my points for a few reservations.

I didn't know until now that the continental breakfast was not included. We always go down for some coffee and something and no one has ever told us there was a fee. Are you guys sure about the breakfast dealio ? The same goes for our Marriott rewards. I like the Courtyard by Marriott and no one has ever hassled us to pay for breakfast at a Marriott.

The easiest way to get Hilton Honors status is to get the Hilton Amex Ascent CC. $95 annual fee and instant Gold status. 2 people stay for 3 nights and you made money on the breakfast already. Then if you charge $40K in a calendar year, your status is bumped to Diamond.

I'll add to Kurt's post by mentioning that if your charge a fairly small amount to the card you get a certificate for a free, one night, weekend stay at a Hilton property. That can pay for the $95 fee right there.

I had to get a different Amex card , mostly for the upgraded auto rental policy benefit , when Costco switched credit cards to Visa from Amex. I went with the no yearly fee card. I already have two others that have fee's of about $100 and didn't want another. While I like Hilton, it seems like the only times we stay at a Hilton is because of flights. We kind of like the Courtyard by Marriott better for extended travel.

Our go-to hotel is Hilton's Homewood Suites or Embassy Suites. They are a good substitute for when a timeshare is not available as they are booth like a small-sized 1BR condo.

I got the AMEX aspire CC, because they offer 12X points for Hilton stays. We will see this December if that still includes HGVC MFs. (If it does, my $6500 Bay Club MFs should give me 75,000 point for my Hilton Honors gold status. We'll see. . . )

When I used my CC bonus points at a DoubleTree stay, I got the choice of a free breakfast each morning or a 1,000 point credit. (Jun 22-23 2018)
