We recently returned from a post-harvest getaway to Maui and I wanted to share a couple of hidden gems for those of you who will be visiting in the next few months.

Prison Street Pizza is a small hole in wall frequented by the locals in Lahaina. The pizza is New York-style and is delicious and--best of all--one of the few truly cheap eats you can find on the island. You can order by the slice or buy a whole pie. Service is friendly and the food is excellent!

808 On Main is a fantastic spot for a great lunch in the somewhat forgotten town of Wailuku. Wailuku is Maui's county seat, but tourists don't go there unless you drive inland to see the Iao Valley and the Needle. If you do happen to visit the beautiful Iao Valley, be sure to stop in Wailuku on your way back to your hotel or timeshare for a meal at 808 On Main. We highly recommend the Lamb Lettuce Wraps, the Mahi Mahi Sandwich, or any of the burgers. And be sure to save room for Pudding Of The Day for dessert. You can get in and out of there for under $40 for lunch for two including tip, which is a deal on Maui.

Thanks for the post. Very timely for us, we’re there in 29 days. First time in five years for us on Maui. We’re bringing friends who have never been there so we will be going to the needle so 808 sounds like a plan.

Thanks. I need more hidden gems for the Kihei/Wailea area since that is where we stay. We do get up to Lahaina, and even Waikluku, a couple of times so I'll keep these in mind.

Whether these are hidden gems or not, I can't say. The Kinaole Grill Food Truck (just outside of Kamaole One Beach Park on Alanui Kealii Drive) has outstanding coconut shrimp as well as crispy calamari. Even the side salad was delicious. Home Maid Cafe is another good one in Kihei. Small hole in the wall place that we went to for breakfast twice (their loco moco was terrific), as well as stopping in for malasadas for a snack (sugar > cream filled).

This likely isn't a hidden gem, but Kihei Caffe was also fantastic for breakfast. Massive portions, so you can likely share a meal, and cash only.
